hello all. I have a 1996 camry. Recently the tranny has been taking a **** on me, poppin out of gear and other random ****. The motor has 212k on it so I figure it is time for a swap. I also drive a nissan and one of the guys from nico said this to be a very helpful sight. He said twin turbo mr2 motor, that it fits my car with a celica tranny. Is this true? And are there any other swaps that could be fitted to my car. Also car must smog( cali sucks balls for smogging)(wich prolly rules out twin turbo but still) Thanks guys, for any help you can give.

Personally, if I were in this situation, I would go with the V6 for a few reasons. I'm going to assume that the 3S-GTE that would be bought would be a ST185 so both engines would have around 200 hp. 1. First of all, the tranny in the current Camry is crap so that would have to be swapped out also. 2. The 3S-GTE that would have to be bought wouldn't be legal since the Camry is a 1996 so the two options are a 1991-1995 MR2 engine or a JDM motor. Neither of which are the same year or newer as the Camry. 3. The swap is a very difficult process that would take a long amount of time to complete and might come along with unseen troubles. (As has been seen by a few members on this board.) 4. The 1MFZE has the same amount of power while it is not turbocharged, therefore, the 1MFZE would most likely be more reliable and last longer. 5. The current Camry that has the blown 5S-FE can probably be sold for about $1800. Another 1996 V6 Camry can be bought for about $5800 with less than 100k miles on it. The difference in these costs would probably equal the total cost of swapping the 3S-GTE, without the hassle. Most of these points were made with an economic point of view rather than performace. Personally, I feel that 200 hp is good enough. (Considering the 5S-FE only has 135...) |
