I have a '97 GT and the engine check light has been on ever since i did my auto to manual swap. My mechanic said it was just a product of the swap, but i was thinking i shoudl make sure. I checked in my Chiltons manual and it says i need to use some special tool (OBD II scan tool) to check the code to check the codes for the 96-98 models. I dont have this tool, but was wondering if i jsut connceted the TE1 and E1 terminals anyway, will i get the beeps and be able to figure out from them? Or do you NEED the scan tool like the manual says?

I have this code reader, the Mac ET50. Pocket sized OBD II reader, cost me about $50. I've definitely gotten my money's worth out of it.

Clicky

But yeah, you can take it to Autozone and they'll scan it for free and tell you what the codes are. Depending on the person working is how much more they'll tell you, but you can at least write the codes down and google them or post them here.
