"L" plate is for "Learners" - can only drive with a fully licensed person in the front passenger seat. They have to complete a certain amount of hours (50 to 150) and be on their "L's" from 6 months to 2 years (depends on which state you live in with hours/months/years required).
"P" is for "Provisional" - can drive on your own, can't have any alcohol in your system, and other laws. Usually there are P1's and P2's - each with different laws/rules. My state only has red P plate's, whereas other states have green and red ones. Not sure about those, but in SA once you have been on your P's for 2 years you can sit the P2 test. When you're on your P2's in SA though you don't have any P-plates on your car - different in other states? Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this haha. |
