I was just skimming through YouTube one day and I came across this video for a drifting 240 and this protruding thingamabob caught my eye...
Then later that day I was out driving and saw an Integra with the same thing except sticking out the rear of the car, just below the rear bumper cover... Who know's what this thing is...? I have my assumptions, but I'd like to be sure:

functionality - its easier to slip a tow hook on that area and drag it out instead of grabbing a shovel and trying to dig a small hole to find a tow hook on the rear or front of the car.
ever been to the track or the canyons and get stuck in really really deep sand that swallows your car and wont let you move? would you rather dig and find a tow hook underneath the car or hook up to the top and drag it out and disappear before the cops show up. is it useful sure. is it needed not really. would you spend 120+ on one ... i would'nt.
