I'm reading the TWM instructions posted in Batman's 7th gen shifter install thread, I found them here.

Anyways I have a spare shifter base so I thought I might try my hands at removing the stick but I cant get the pins to budge, and judging by whats in those instructions, mine looks different to the USDM one...

the only thing that the white thing that goes to the top and bottom on the shifter does is give the gears a notchy feel (like a "click" feel when you go into gear) once you put a set of brass shifter bushing in it you will never notice it not being there. i dont have it in mine and it works fine without it. you put a weighted shift knob on it and it'll feel like a dream.
