hey everyone,

I got into an argument today about the 3s. The people I was talking with insisted that EVERY cast iron block MUST have sleeves, because cast iron cant stand up to the conditions in a cylinder.

I said that the 3s does not have sleeves, and when I jumped on google I confirmed that fact. However, I could not find information on whether the cylinder walls are plated with a harder material. Could someone shed some light on the issue? If i remember right I saw photos of cylinder liners on someones 3s block in a thread. Do we have cylinder liners or is it just the cast block? I looked through my factory service manual and couldn't find any information either.

thats what I always thought too. And I never saw anything on 6gc saying otherwise. But these dudes have been in CNC manufacturing for years, and they insisted that cast iron wouldn't be able to stand up to the abuse of a cylinder, and therefore that there must be a sleeve. I figured that at most there could be plated layer on the cylinder walls. But that would be pretty high end for a 90's engine. Then I remembered seeing a photo of the cylinder walls through one of the coolant ports on the block, meaning the coolant flows around the cylinder walls just like wet liners.

So to me it seems that we have a cylinder block with a water jacket surrounding the cylinder walls, just like wet liners, only minus the removable part.

anyone else have anything to add? I'm still curious as to why these guys think cast iron is a bad material for cylinder walls...
