first of all let me clarify, my welding skills are the same as me flying the space shuttle.
Although im not stupid... First of all ill star by saying that im using a crappy harbor freight mig welder.... Yes i know. My question is why when i weld sheet metal, when the borders are clean of rust, and good separation between sheets, the welder melts and makes holes. I have it in the min setting and slowest speed. The only way i found i can do it is by creating a mountain of slag, which is a pain to go back and grind. for example.... i have grinded the bottom here... ![]() here is a closeup... ![]() and here is the back... ![]() I know im not an expert, but this welder sucks ass.. Period, no good settings, all good to make sparkle, but it welds like crap. What should i do... A. Should I go for a TIG welder... B. Or a better mig, i mean, are all migs going to give me this crappy buildup... I HATE GRINDING...... please advise... -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... I hardly log in anymore, last login Today Sept 6 2019, and I was forced just to clarify a post. LOL
If you PM me and I dont respond, dont fret or cry. Im alive, better post your questions in the thread below, maybe I log back in 2grfe Swapped... Why I chose the 2GR, before you ask read here... A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within. @llamaraxing in Instagram is the best way to find me. I hardly log here anymore. |

Yea welding with a flux core mig on thin metal is super annoying. I did all my intercooler and exhaust piping that way. I actually went back and double check/touched up the IC piping last night. Flux core is going to have a lot of slag like that, there's no way around it. Your angle grinder will be your new girlfriend. Just take your time (do a bit and if you get annoyed walk away and come back later) and it'll come out OK with some practice. Oh, and make sure you prep the metal really well first and have a really good ground.
