After 7 hours of racing, it looks like we broke the radiator cap, we thought nothing of it kept on. Whelp, we think the broken cap did not allow the the coolant system to be pressurized, all of the water steamed off, the coolant system dried out, at about 9:30 PM the engine over heated and stalled at about 90 mph on the back straight. We are pretty sure it fried the thermostat, pooched the head gasket, and god knows what else to the block....

Is it possible for a failed thermostat to destroy an engine !?!?

@Smaay, yep I agree... the lack of coolant is what did all the damage, the broken rad cap was the crux of it all... also not checking the gauges... during the driving. Going to have to come up with habit to check the gauges with some kind of cadence or maybe some kind of visual or audio alert to help with that...
