Motor swap in CA Options

I drive a 95 celica st and was wondering what toyota motor will be a direct swap for my 7afe motor. I want something with more horsepower and dont want to do alot of work. any suggestions? i live in cali so the 3sgte motor will not be an option.

if i recall correctly, 93 was last year sold for the MKII MR2 state side, the 95 j-spec motor is in fact a "gen 4" 3sgte. but there is alot of confusion on that since the "gen" designation between the US-spec 3SGTE's and the J-spec 3SGTE's actually do not line up as per the same year. IIRC the last revision of the 3SGTE was in 98.. unfortunatly for the OP none of this works due to cali regs.

Actually they did sell MR2's in the US during 1994 and 1995, but they are exceedingly rare.

If those numbers are correct, they brought less than 300 MR2's over in 1995 and they're all N/A and have the same 5S-FE, and even in 1994 they only sold 250 Turbo's. Good luck getting anyone to part with one, though!

thank you for the correction... so basically for us laymen, not an option though.. that's one of the reasons i just got a 91 N/A after searching for a "good" MR2, the car is going to be a full project car. And primary differences between the 91 and the later revised 93+ is the rear cross member which changed the rear suspension geometry, and some body stuff (US spec). nothing that i would not address during the project.
