I have a 20v silvertop in my celica and was hoping to get some quick advice as to what to try next. The car starts and idles fine and drives fine through the neighborhood; however, upon acceleration through 1st 2nd and 3rd the car is sluggish and hesitant with some backfiring. When I get up to a good speed of 45mph plus car runs fine ( thank god). Changed plugs and wires, cleaned afm and checked for vacuum leaks. What next? Tps (100$) or just replace the afm altogether. Or is there something else I could check? Thanks for any help guys I know someones been here before.

My BEAMS won't always throw a light either but I can still pull codes by jumping pins in the diagnostics box under the hood. I'd bet the Silvertop is the same way. I'd start there and see if you can find anything. I'm not too familiar with the 4A but you should be able to check the timing yourself. You can remove the passenger side lower engine cover and look behind the wheel to see the crank pulley. It should have a mark on it with a measurement on the timing cover to show degrees to top dead center. Then remove the upper timing by cover and you should see a mark or notch on each cam gear. I'd start with checking for codes first though.
