I just reduces heavy spray, it is alluminum so it also dissipates heat as well, it is in between the stock gt4 shield and nothing.
If you block the airflow completely the hood does not work as it was intended. Many people run them wide open and have no issues at all. You would be better off running it wide open than blocking airflow completly. Edit: you are also going to have a small lake in the middle of your hood if you block this area off completly.
