The part that is circled in red, what is it for??

I thought it was the housing for the air speed indicator so they know how fast they're going when they have no wheels on the ground.

You mean like G sensors used by ABS/TRC/STM systems, etc? I don't see a speedometer here, not to say they dont take a speed input for datalogging...
