Oh what a morning, off to work for my 65 mile commute in my happy little red gen 6 and about 20 minutes in to my journey the battery light flickers on....
From there it started to get interesting, it was obvious that I hadn't broken a belt, so the alternator is turning but the lights are dimming, the stereo just shut off and the turn signals are making the speedometer and tach bounce to zero,... well only 40 miles to go.... So I continued on, and amazingly enough even though touching the breaks was killing the fuel pump, I somehow made it to my parking spot at work. So now I sit at my desk contemplating a rebuilt alternator, or just buying the parts and rebuilding it myself, anyone else rebuilt a toyo alt? Seems like rock auto, or villagetoyotaparts.com both have the parts needed to do a rebuild. Rob |

If its the windings in the stator or rotor then you will have a tough time finding a replacement or you can locate the break or short and solder/fix it yourself.
Hopefully its the diodes or voltage regulator, which are seperate parts inside the alternator and on some vehicles are external from the alternator. Finding a rebuild kit will be tough but not impossible. All the remanufactured alternators are shipped to China or Mexico and rebuilt there so the parts do exist. At some point the labor became cheaper to ship a broken alternator to the opposite side of the globe and have the labor force there repair it rather than just have a local mechanic perform the repair/remanufacturing of the alternator. Youre easiest option will of course be to grab a junkyard alternator or remanufactured one with a Lifetime Warranty from the parts store. Ive got the original starter and delcotron(alternator) for my 64 chevy for example This post has been edited by Special_Edy: Oct 2, 2012 - 1:42 PM |
