why sleeve the engine? its an iron block. you can make 500HP without sleeves

why sleeve the engine? its an iron block. you can make 500HP without sleeves I've read more than one place that the bore spacing between 2 and 3 is pretty small and as such at high power levels the coolant between them in the water jacket can boil and cause hot spots that can crack the cylinders. The coolant flash boils, the cylinder gets really hot in that one spot, then the coolant condenses and quenches it suddenly. After many cycles it can crack. Sleeves are made from steel, not iron, and are much more resistant to this.
