If it were me I'd do the liftback, but I don't care for convertibles. Still the biggest flaw of the Miata.

Local used car dealer here in Broken Arrow (OK) has a white 1999 vert with 138K. I stopped by one evening and walked around it. It has 17 inch after market wheels on it. The driver side is dinged and repaired and repainted. I was not able to see the engine bay but interior is leather and looked fairly clean. Dealer wants 5995 or about. I was thinking of trading in with my ST with all the work done on the engine and other upgrades.

Question to you all gurus out there: What should be a good trade in price? but before that What are some inherent "faults" that I need to check for. It is 5 speed and I believe it has 2.2l engine (don't know the engine family). I plan on going to the dealer this weekend.

GT models came with the 2.2 5S-FE and ALL convertibles are a GT. Honestly the dealer wants way too much, as usual, and usually they won't trade on used cars unless it's just stupendously in their favour. I went to your Celica page but you don't have any mods listed, so I really can't say what yours would be worth in relation. Really offhand the only faults would be the third gear synchronizer to look out for, I can't remember if the 5S really had any problem areas but being I can't think of any at the moment there probably really aren't any. If it were me for what the dealer will probably want you to add on top of your car you could probably get a decent NA6 Miata to get your convertible fun.

Thanks Box. My mods are small stuff, nothing major on the engine. It is rebuilt 7AFE, i put new rings bearings and all that, redid all head work. Other than eBay exhaust manifold, engine is stock. I added an oil cooler that is connected to a sandwich adapter that opens at 181 degrees. This adds a little benefit of adding more oil and keeps the oil relatively cool.

Inside I installed leather seats, newer factory radio, speakers, LED light bulbs in the dash with reverse indiglow gauges.

Outside: side panels, front and rear OEM spats, rear window shade/spoiler and 15 inch wheels with Kelly tires. I replaced all four struts and brake rotors and drums. Plus all regular tuneups done. The paint is the only thing left. Nothing like what I read here!

I am sure dealer would ask me to give him my car plus add some. I just wanted to see if it is worth the buy. He has other cars like 300ZX vert also and 350Z but that means more money out of my pocket.

Honestly its too much. If it had lower miles, beyond perfect then i could see it fetching that. I sold my 97 vert for 6k but it was beyond spotless and has 103k on it. Its personal preference. I picked up a 98 vert for $700 from a old couple because it needed tires haha

It sounds like your car is pretty solid and you know what you have, are you really willing to trade it and add cash for practically the same car you know nothing about its history? Really unless you're dying for a convertible I wouldn't do it, too many nice examples from private parties for half the price. One near me that's a black '99 for $2,800 at the moment.

You guys are right. My car is pretty solid (knock on wood). It is my dealy driver. I wish it had a bit more power but other than that it is all right Thank you Box for your honest advice. I appreciate it. That car is off my list.

I'd just hate to see you get screwed or end up regretting it. My Celica was a ST so I can relate on the power issue, but with some suspension bits it was fairly fun to drive.

thank You Box. I have front and rear strut brace on it and it can take corners with confidence. I could use a 6th gear LOL but it is fun to drive. Good gas mileage as well.

yeah your ST is clean, I wouldn't trade it. and besides just because it's a GT doens't make it too much faster. You'll tire of the 5sfe pretty quickly and look for a swap anyways. and it's not too much more work to swap on an ST.

I've had my ST for 10+ years now and I push it as much as I can. (which isn't much) but with almost all new and upgraded suspension bits, I feel very confidently and can mash on the gas pedal without fear. it makes it a very fun car.
