I turned on my air conditioner the other day and the little LED on the button started flashing and the air wasn't being cooled. It was as if the air conditioner wasn't even on.

But then sometimes I turn it on and it works fine. It seems like just randomly the light flashes and the air doesn't get cooled. What's wrong?

when i had this problem it turned out that my AC didn't have enough freon pressure in the system. Recharged it and no problems at all.

A/C is too much for the 4 cyl. Mine does the same and i'm sure everyone elses does too. It was discussed in my thread when i had the same question.

Actually your engines are designed to idle up slightly when the ac comes on. This is done automatically by the ecu. I've noticed that the older the engine the less it will idle up. Eventually the car will idle down on starting the ac and then idle back to just below regular idle. I noticed this over time with my previous '95 GT.

you dont know much about cars do you..... if 4 cyl cars stalled all the time with ac would they equip them.... no

it puts a large load on the engine and the ecu compensates by increasing idle till the compressor gets going.... the start of a compressor takes the most power.....

same as starting an electric motor.... inrush current of a medium sized motor may be 27 amps when its running current is only 15amp

so think of the load a compressor could put on the motor

up your regular idle a bit.... it may help

Not that I know much about all this, but from what you all are saying about the ECU increasing the idle with the ac on, does'nt it sound like his ECU is not working right? Maybe unplugging the battery for a few minutes would help reset the system?

dont get harsh...

He said the same as what you said except in 1 sentence. The A/C is too much of a load for a low idling 4-cyl. Also, exactly how do I manually increase my idle. Last time I checked, Celicas had a electronically controlled idle position sensor based off the O2 sensors. But maybe I just dont anything about cars either.

Just from experience and not from any written source: don't try to adjust the idle ecpecially not with the mechanical adjusts on the throttle body. I did this on my '95 and it idled and started like sh*t afterwards. Plus it took me forever to get it back to the factory settings at which time it still did the a/c thing. Of course the '95 was auto.
Hopefully someone here can tell you how to actually fix the problem.
