Alright my situation is I am trying to upgrade my sound system and I am blind when it comes to that area of cars. I am looking for a good sounding system but one that I can get for a decent price as I am just a teenager working as a lifeguard. So I was hoping some of you guys might help me out. I don't know if it was a mistake or not but I already got sony explod 6.5's in the front (no clue what sony explod's rate against other companies, crap...decent?) Anyway I am looking to get a new head unit b/c my old one is trash, some rear speakers, a nice amp, and some subs nothing to big because I am not really a rap fan but I like the idea of three subs so I was thinking of three 10's or maybe better three 8's. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ok my opinion, 3 is WAY to much. If your not a big rap fan ur rock is going to be so loud, its ridiculous.

Theres a Panasonic head unit out now I dont kno the model # off hand but its a good unit, plays MP3s/WMAs, CD-RWs and everything and its $160.
For the amp, I would suggest a Kenwood 350 or so, not hugely powerful but enough to drive a good sub and not that expensive.

As for subs, you make like the idea of 3 subs, but its neither going to sound great, or be light on the wallet. I would suggest ONE 10'' or ONE 12''. Theres an Infinity Reference 12'' for $100 plus another $60 for the box. Its a nice hitting sub, and will shake ur car plenty.

keep ur subwoofers in odd numbers, better sound production either go with 1 or 3 or even 5 if u balla. JL audio is a must. I had 3 8 inch W0's and upgraded to 3 12 inch W6's. Turned out waste of money, hits harder but isnt as clean.

First off, if on a budget, look into Profile for an amp. Cheap power and solid amps.
Profile

For subs, I'd get one Alpine Type R or Infinity Perfect. Sounds like you are looking for some SQ.
Type R
Perfect

GET RID OF YOUR EXPLODES, very bad coaxials. I'd get some CDT CL-6X's, or maybe some Infinity Reference coaxials.
CDT's
Infinity Reference

Don't forget this:
Wiring Kit

Box: Ebay, 1.0ft^3, Bigdog Audio.

Headunit: If on a budget, go JVC. Maybe a lower pioneer or alpine.

Who told you that? I've never heard that before.

Also, wiring three subs to one amp is typically going to present a weird load to the amp, unless you go with something like a trio of 10w6s that have dual 3 ohm voice coils or something.

What kind of music do you listen to? I take it that since you're not into rap much you like your system to have pretty good SQ...is that a correct assumption?

Everyone has there own opinons when it comes to headunits, subs, and etc....

Personly I like alpine and kenwood for headunits. Your best bet is to goto best buy and start turning them on and checking them out.

This would be the same for speakers. But one thing I know. If you use 10inch subs you need 3, 12inch subs you need 2, and 15inch sub you need 1. 10's and 15's you want a odd number of speakers, and 8's and 12's you want a even number of subs. Also the larger the sub, the more distortion you would have. A 10inch sub will hit hard, and quick, where a 15inch sub will hit very hard and echo alittle.

Just my 2 cents!

I worked for a car audio shop in my teen days.......He kind of has it right, but if you run 3 speakers you want 3 amps, not one amp for 3 speakers......You will fry that amp!

One more thing...If you not in to rap, I would use 3 10's JL audio is good, or audiobaun is nice too. Kenwood makes some nice subs if you dont want to spend alot.

No, that's not true. It all depends on the impedance of the speakers, how they're wired, and what amp it is. For example, say you have 3 JL 10w6 subs. They're dual 6-ohm voice coil subs. Now, if you wire those subs with the voice coils of the subs in parallel and then the subs themselves in parallel, you get a 1 ohm load, which is ideal on many class D amps. If you've got three of the 10w6 subs and a Class A/B amp that can put out maximum power bridged at four ohms, then simply wire the subs so that the voice coils are in series and the subs themselves are in parallel, and you've got a 4 ohm load.

Again, this is dependent on the type of subwoofers. Sure, you might need three cheap subs to get some decent output, but unless you're big into SPL competitions or anything, there's no way you'll need three RE XXX 10" subs...one is plenty loud.

And I've seen single 10" subs that get louder than two 15" subs. And I've seen 15" subs that sound far cleaner and have better SQ than 10" subs. wink.gif

trash the sonys cause they suck, Alpine, CDT, Crystal,Kicker,JL, Infinity, Audiobaun, Blaupunkt, Rainbow, Pioneer(are OK), Interfire, Profile, and verious others are great. You can go alpine all around and be very satisfied with your system.

simple enough, upgrade your speakers, i personally hate sony, but what ever sounds better to you, dont get anymore then 1 sub.. 1 12" will be great.. I have two 12" rockfords, around 1800 watts an such.. I have the bass on full neg and the non fadin on full neg.. an its still loud .. or just get components and replace your drivers with 8" subs an power them like 100 wats each

My opinion:

headunit: Alpine or Premier
components: Infinity Kappa
subs: Pyle flat cone
amps: phoenix gold

I listen to trance / dance music.
