A few days ago I noticed that when I shift into 5th gear at about 55 theres a whistling noise that kind of gets louder when i put my foot down more and then slowly gets quieter when i am cruising at a constant speed. It's not really an airy whistling, I figure somethin's rubbin on something. It's time for me to change my oil but since it JUST started I'm just curious about what all it may be. It's only in 5th gear for sure. I'm not a transmission person at all so if anybody can tell me anything I'd appreciate it.

Intake manifold problem? are you sure its coming directly from the transmission. transmission and powersteering are generally a more of a whine than a whistle.

I assume it's directly from the transmission. I'll be doing 50 in 4th then shift to 5th and the second I get off the clutch it starts. And then I get back on the clutch downshifting and it stops when I'm in 4th. That's what I thought too having had the power steering problem in another car, but it's like me trying to whistle. But a rough whistle. I just don't want to be in 5th doing 65 (top speed) and have a gear decide it doesn't want to participate anymore This post has been edited by nwizzle: Jan 23, 2011 - 12:55 AM |

1)Your gearbox is probably leaking oil. I had this problem with another type of car, the problem was occuring only in 2nd gear. It was some kind of bearing and an axle seal. Don't change the oil before you make sure that your gearbox oil isn't leaking! And if you need to change one axle seal, maybe you should change the other one too, they're not expensive. They have the same code, so they fit from left to right (don't bother looking for two different parts, they're identical).
2)Another probability might be that you (or a previous owner) opened the gearbox for some reason and changed the fifth gear's .... I don't know what is it called... that "wheel" from the mobile train). Since not all the "wheels" were changed, the 5th gear "wheel" is not used very much as the other gear "wheels", so when the 5th gear is engaged, the "fixed" train "wheel" doesn't fit perfectly on the mobile train's wheel, as the other gears do. Sorry if I'm not making sense, but: a)my english isn't very good; b)for the second answer, I called my mechanic, he explained it to me in romanian and I translated what I understood from him As a conclusion, your oil is definately low and... that sound you're talking about is probably some kind of whistle sound. Sorry if I couldn't be helpful. (edit: I see that you already described the type of sound in the topic's title) This post has been edited by quick_5hifter: Jan 23, 2011 - 2:24 PM -------------------- ![]() |

I am now convinced that it is an oil problem. My car managed to lose all of its oil in a matter of 3 days so I'm gonna look at all the seals Tuesday when I'm off. I replaced that oil today and it held it fine in between cranks and to and from work, so I'll be checking it in the morning also. But even with new oil it was making the noise, just not nearly as bad.
And I know I have not been fiddlin with the gearbox and I hope that the previous owner didn't either. But that was very helpful. If I find out what it is for sure I'll post it as future reference. Thanks |

Update: I've narrowed this down to the throwout bearing or 5th gear synchronizer. Does that sound right to anyone? I'm just reading a lot of stuff on it.

nwizzle---
Does it sound like a " baby turbo "? Ours started doing this a few days ago. I thought it may be the alt belt, since it's so cold, but seems it may be the same thing you are experiencing??!!?? |

That's a good description, yes. I also thought any belt may have changed due to the cold but they all seem fine.
My dad says the best thing I can do, since I'm buyin another car this summer, is to just wait til it goes completely and wait til I buy the 1mz and fix the transmission all at once. It took me 5 whole minutes to get it to go into reverse today. It's a bad feeling lol |

mine sounds like a "spoolup" and a "spool down" when slowly taking off in 1st gear or slowing down, regardless of clutch in or out, might happen in other gears but i cant hear much over my exhaust.
this the same thing? -------------------- Mike W

its a very feint spool up and spool down sound when taking off and slowing down to a stop.
its best heard with clutch in, idle rpm, 1st gear, starting to roll down a hill, ive never tried it with the motor off but i'd imagine i'd hear it louder. it sounds like neither a turbo or a supercharger, it sounds more like a transmission sound similar to what reverse would make but not as loud. -------------------- Mike W

I only heard it when accelerating & changing gears. No noise in neutral or pressing clutch.
The noise went away on it's own!! Haven't heard in for awhile!! Driving home from work after the storm a couple weeks ago, it started acting up. 2 days later, my friend let me use a space in his shop to look it over. When I opened the hood, there was a piece of inner tube on the rocker cover-- no idea where it came from!! I had a problem with " bucking " in 2-4th, between 25-40 mph. I put on new cap & rotor & #4 plug wire. #4 was split right at the retaining clip on the cap. I replaced the items because last time it acted like this, a tune up took care of it. Now, it will still do it, but only sometimes, & intermittently--doesn't matter if it's warm or cold. Ideas???? Thanks for any help!!!! |
