I hate to be a killjoy, but as much as i LOVE drifting, and am the only FWD car in my crew (TEAMR4D.COM) I would have to say drifting is a BIIIG MONEY PIT. you abuse your car, break it, and pay pay pay to fix. i know its cheap, but money is money.

THEN you have to pay 50-125 dollars just to drift at a sanctioned event (ie a large parking lot)

in charlotte there are two drift series one is streetwise drift (streetwisedrift.com) and koss motorsports (kossmotorsports.com)

sorry enough of my rant.

I would have to say (and as much as i HATE HATE HATE looking like EVERYONE ELSE) The 240 platform is the way to go hands down. after spending like 4 years involved in this and hanging out with drifters, ive seen that rotaries are a pain in the ass and are never running right, AE86's like every other toyota will BUTT RAPE you for parts, and would you really want to import a car to beat on it?

anyway, sorry to be negative, but go for the 240 norberto! with your genius you can get a good shell for like 800-900 and go to town! or you can get a beat up one with a KA in it for like 1200 or so. KA motors are great to start with and as everyone said before have A TON of aftermarket support.

You want power but have no money. That's a problem.

Cheap. Reliable. Fast. Pick two.

i drift my ae86 i won't drift any other car but thats my cup of tea.

IMO i think the best is a 240sx,very cheap to buy and common parts to find alot of power for the price.perfect for learning.Beware drifting puts alot of wear and tear,so be ready to have extra cash after drifting.

But if you really want an AE86 from my experience their alot of fun and tough.Im running a blue top 4age.alot of clutch kicking and pretty much keeping your gas peddle pin.A LSD is a must.Swap are great for more power.i live in california so im kinda stuck with a 4age and my AE86 is a daily driver. But it best to learn off a stock car to get the feel of it.then spend to your preference.

The only point in which the tires weren't billowing mass amounts of smoke was when the car was at a standstill. So awesome.
