You are definitely NOT mistaken. You do have to pull down the edge of the carpet from under where the console normally sits, unbolt the four (12mm?) bolts that hold down the shifter assembly, and then unclick the small blue plastic connector housing that has two small blue and two small green wires coming out of it towards the rear. Then you can either unpin the two blue wires or cut them so that you can pull the shifter knob up and out, taking the two blue little wires up through the top of the black round sleeve that sits just aft of the metal shifter rod.
Once you have that done, you can replace the shifter cover plate under the shifter panel (the one that has P, R, N, D, 1,2) and then insert the two small blue wires back into that black sleeve and down under the entire assembly. Then route those two little wires back towards the blue plastic connector and either press the two pins back into it or solder the wires back on if you cut them.
If you want to unpin the two little blue wires you have to pull off the small white square locking pin that is on the side of the blue plastic connector and then use the proper tool to unpin the wires.
Crazy that it takes that much disassembly just to replace that little shifter cover plate, but that's what it takes.
If I could figure out how to post photos, I could post a photo of the broken shifter cover plate and a replacement I made with some ABS material from Amazon.

Regards, Maurice.

My gf's convertible top was looking REALLY ratty, and falling apart in places on her '97 vert.

Replaced it over the course of two full days, WITH her help!

Here are before and after photos:

The top is made by Robbins and fit perfectly.

Regards, Maurice.

Bump. I want this car out of my garage ASAP. Going to renovate the garage and pour new concrete so it just needs to go. Come get anything you want from it for super cheap.

Lots of parts already pulled, take whatever you want.

How much for the IAC valve, shipped to 11520?

Regards, Maurice.

If your engine is a 5SFE, do you still have the IAC (Idle Air Control Valve)?

If you have the IAC, let me know how much you want for it, shipped to 11520. It would easily fit in a USPS Priority Mail Small Box.

Regards, Maurice.

I have it. Will PM you.

Adam: Any progress on the IAC valve?

Regards, Maurice.

I'm looking for a front emblem for my '97 GT that is sort of a "smoked" or bronze chrome color.

I'm not sure if these were only on Special Edition GT's, but I haven't been able to locate these or any information on them.

If anyone knows where I can locate this emblem, or the clear plastic "special edition" stickers that sit on the rear of the front fenders, I'd appreciate any leads.

Regards, Maurice.

carcamo:

You beige top looks nice and substantial! Is it an aftermarket top? Who makes it and did you DIY it?

You wheels are not too shabby either! What kind of wheels are they?

Regards, Maurice.

Sanders:

What color are those emblems? I have bronze ones on my Celica, but I'm missing one. Let me know what color they are, it's hard to tell from the photo.

Also, if the deals falls through for the steering wheel, let me know as I'd like to be next up.

Regards, Maurice (schoir).

Hey guys, I sold my celica more than a year ago and still have a set of wheels and tires in my garage. Just looking to get rid of them for like $50. Tires have some life left in them, wheels are in okay condition...I think there are pics in my profile of the stock wheels.

Newbie with first post.

I've got a '97 GT vert and I'm looking for information on the best various canvas convertible tops available. My original is a tan color and I'd like to keep the color stock. Any opinions, pros/cons of any suppliers of tops would be appreciated.

Regards, S-choir.

Freddie:
