I gathered all the details I could on the 8-speaker system here: Premium 8 Speaker System but it was all for naught. I an accidental short killed the amp and the tweeters. I've replaced it with an Alpine 4 channel amp, but it just doesn't sound the same. What can I do?
Budget: $250 With a budget of about $250 US, I'm looking for general recommendations on speakers and crossovers. What size? Where to mount? How would I best spend my money? Existing, factory system: - 1997 Celica GTS with 8-speaker factory system - 1" tweeters in the A pillars (no longer functioning) - 4" speakers mounted high in the front doors (4 ohm) - 8" speakers mounted low in the front doors (2 ohm) - 6" speakers in the rear (4 ohm) (can probably fit up to a 8" here) - Head unit does not have an internal amp - factory amp+crossover is dead - replaced with Alpine MPR-F240 amp (4 channel, 40w per channel, 2-ohm stable, 80Hz high/low-pass filter) The Problem I've hooked the new Alpine amp up and the sound quality is only OK. I think the problems are: - tweeters are dead - no crossover - the factory speakers are getting old Preferences: - I listen to rock, pop, funk, soundtrack classical - Want a balanced system - Don't like bright speakers, don't need deep bass, like midbass - Don't want tweeter in the rear - Willing to make custom mounting plates (e.g replace the 8" with a new 6") - Not willing to make custom kick panels or fabricate trim pieces - KISS Any suggestions? - Cheap, easy: 4" Inifinity coaxial up front, keep existing rear 6", front 8" but add passive band-pass and low-pass crossover - Best, too expensive: 1"/4"/6" 3 way component set, replace 8" with 8" Kicker free air subs. - Middle ground: get a high quality 2-way 1"/6" component set, drop all other speakers? - Alternatives? Thanks! Brian |
