Hi all,

Can anyone help me identify what or where in the UK I can get the speed limiter and spedometer converted on a 1994 JDM SS-II ST202?

I bought the car from an importer who was apparently selling the car on behalf of another private importer, hence the speedo only reads KPM (and only to 180!) and the car cuts out (rather dramatically) once it reaches this. The dealer promised to sort out the speedo and expressed supprise about the limiter but since it's an auto the only solution he could provide was a new speedo face that reads up to 110 MPH... I also understand from other threads that cutting wires isn't wise on an auto to remove the limiter.

Apart from the obvious danger of the thing cutting out while accelarating round a corner, it's getting a bit embarrising being passed on the motorway by, well just about everything....

Firstly, getting passed on the freeway at 180 km per hour is not embarassing. There will always be a car with higher final speed but who cares. My GT4 and My Curren are both JDMs and both have this limiters. I do not even consider trying to get them off because to put it simple words they dont mean anything. The first time i broke the 200 km per hour limit was with my dad's 1.5L 4 door Lancer about 10 years ago when i was 18. After that the only thing that impressed me was the 300km per hour with a supra.

Now since you want to do something about the speed limiter; you can always remove it somehow and there are some add-on kits to convert kms into miles. Just get a mag about import cars and you will find plenty of ads about it.

Well i've searched everywhere and found lots of ads for devices to convert KPM to miles which will also remove the limer (well shift it to 180MPH where it's not a problem) but non of them seem to be quoted for the automatic. I was hoping to find a replacement UK ECU but they never sold the Celica as an auto in the UK (so i'm not sure if it would fit or work) and a uk dash wouldn't have the indicatiors for the auto transmission though it would at least read to 160 MPH?

If i'd bought a manual SS-II this wouldn't have been a problem as I could just fit a UK ECU and dash or fit a sppedo converter.

Trouble is I do quite a few long journeys and it's difficult to keep looking down at the dash to avoid hitting the limiter. As soon as you go down a hill your speed picks up and the engine cuts. With the car just below the limiter it's only doing around 115 and there are times when i've felt embarrised about holding up the traffic (seriously).

Anyway what's the point of having a Celica if it's slower than my battered old Rover 600. I might as well just bought another. ;-)

Are you talking about 115 m/h or km/h. If the limiter cuts in at 115km/h then you have a problem and i dont think its the limiter. If on the other hand, you are talking about slowing up traffic at 115 m/h then you also have a problem but this time its just you.

seriously, i only had limiter trouble when i raced a Merc on the highway at 190 km/h but ic ould never say i slow up traffic at that speed.??????? confused.gif

jcohen i think you want to go more than 180kph and you have a cut-out right??
You are asking about speed converter from kph to mph??Or you are asking about removing the speed limiter from 180kph??
Both ways can be done.

Yep I need both. I measured the speed today with a GPS set to read MPH and it cuts at about 112 MPH with the speedometer at the end stop (just as the auto goes in to top gear in sport mode) so it cuts dead on 180 KPH and the speedometer is a little over optimistic.

I know I can fit a converter on the feed to the speedo but but was unsure if doing this to the ECU (as is normal practice for manuals I believe) would mess up the automatic gearbox shfts.

...and yes, when it cuts I pull over to let the queue pass. frown.gif Seriously, for those not familier with UK roads, our cars often run at two speeds, stopped and flat out. You haven't experienced fear until you've been in a 10 mile queue of traffic all doing 90+ MPH with the cars spaced around <10 metres apart. If you try and leave a gap someone in a 1.3 litre vauxhall nova will pull in in front and the person behind will flash you! rolleyes.gif
