Sometimes when I'm driving around I hear a sound like keys jingling that seems to be coming from the front-right fender of the car, I guess in the wheel well or something. I had it with my previous tire, then when that got a hole and I was driving around on my spare, it was fine for a while. Now after a week or so I think it has returned. Has anyone heard this coming from their car, or does anyone have any idea what it could be? I thought before that it was a piece of my wheel shaking around, but now with a totally different wheel it's back. Any help would be appreciated. |

I think I've identified the culprit, which would be a little jingly thing smack dab in the middle of the wheel, but not part of the wheel itself, which would explain why the jingling continued after changing to the spare.
![]() The little thing that resembles a gear around the main mount for the wheel seems loose, and I have no idea what it is there for, because I couldn't see it on the other wheels. It just looks like a little rusted piece of metal, maybe with no useful purpose at all. Does anyone know what this is or how I could take it off? If I'm bored tomorrow I'll jack up the car and see if I can remove it, and also see if the other wheels have the same thing. This post has been edited by funnyboy117: Jul 4, 2004 - 9:34 PM |

The thing with the cotter pin through it? It covers your axle and the cotter pin keeps the nut that holds your axle in from coming loose.

Also it keeps the threads on your axle from being damaged.

Well I guess I can't take it off...any idea how to tighten it or keep it from rattling? Maybe just some strong glue or something? |

what i did was: bend the pin that run through that metal ring more so it will pinch the metal ring. This way the ring will not move anymore and the rattle is gone. Problem solve. took 10 minute to do.. Remove the hub cap, took some plyers and gave it a good bend.
