I'm just wondering if an amp will help keep the distortion of my speakers down. I have Pioneer TS-A1680R, 4 of them. They handle 2-50 watts RMS and 220 peak ( I don't know if that number is for both in the pair, or each).

Right now I'm running them off of the built-in deck amp, which is sending out 50x4 watts peak, 22 rms. I also have 2 subs in the back, which don't distort before the speakers do, so I'm not worried about that for now. In fact, I haven't had them distort yet. But the question is, should I get a third amp just for the speakers, to send them up to their 50 watts RMS? Will that help with the slight distortion I'm getting when I turn everything up too loud, or will it simply increase sound quality a little at the lower levels?

I don't wanna waste a couple hundred bucks getting an amp that won't solve my problem, so thanks for any ideas you guys have.

Yep, amping those speakers will make them sound much better, with less distortion. smile.gif

itīll make them sound way better. keep in mind that the power rated on your deck (4 x 50) is MAX wattage. You may see anywhere between 12-25w rms, depending on the deck. I always recommend getting an amp. Each speaker should handle 50w RMS without a problem. DO NOT put 220w on each, youīll fry the coils. Even with a 4 x 25 you will notice an improvement. They get louder, and donīt distort HALF as much at higher volums.

Yeah, you definetly want a nice 4 channel amp for those smile.gif And from your post, I'm glad to see that you didn't fall for the 50x4 = RMS thing all the head unit makers want us to fall for.. some of the best of us fall for that (*cough*andason*cough*)
