i wondering whats the best method,
the method i think i am going to do is just fiberglass it from the inside and fill it up on the out side with some everlast & dyna body filler.
but i think i heard that welding is the best method.
so if you have done this i would like to hear how ya did it

fiberglass the back use bondo on the front to fill in any remaining spaces/holes after you sand down.

Do not do this. It'll fall in eventually. You have you weld a piece of sheet metal from behind then fill over top with a fine finishing putty. Make sure to spray the back of the weld to prevent rust. I just did mine last week. Pics to come within a week.

hmmm, welding huh. i can do mostly anthing but i dont know about welding. supersprynt you shaved yours with fiberglass and some filler

I welded mine up. I did cut the piece to almost the exact size of the hole and welded it flush with the car. Then I grinded down the welds and filled it all in. Doing this will keep you from having to take the fender off.

With that little piece using some gorilla hair will be fine. I think he means that fiberglass to metal isnt a great bond, which it isnt, but gorilla hair holds pretty well and its not a high movement/size piece.

Fiberglass actually bonds really well to metal. Just scuff it up a bit and it sticks really well.

However, the best way to shave sidemarkers is to weld a piece of metal in there, at least from what I've heard from a couple body shops. On my '88 Celica, we welded a piece of metal on the backside of each fender, and then drilled a bunch of small holes in the welded metal. Then we filled the area with some Bondo-Glass and sanded it down smooth.

The holes allow some body filler to get through and harden to lock the body filler into place...I know that my friend didn't do this when he shaved his door handles and a couple weeks later the Bondo cracked under the primer and you could see it. I know this probably isn't a concern, since fenders don't see the kind of stress and movement that a swinging, slamming car door does, but it never helps to do it the best way the first time. wink.gif

hmm ok i see, i think i might have to weld it then, im wondering if i can just jb weld a peice of metal or do i need a welder. how hard is it to learn to weld, i have no clue how to do it at all, well i got a idea but not really

When I brought my car into get a quote on the paint I had a long talk with the owner goin over the entire car and what would entail making it perfect. He said that theres no real good fiberglass compound that bonds with metal really well, theres good stuff but he said its just not reliable. Gorilla Hair is what he recommended.

I did mine with fiberglass, and I have it primered and so far (knock on wood) its been good, no cracking or anything.

how long have you had it done for. and do you drive your car or is it just kept up in the garage

fiberglass will bond well, if the surface is preped properly. And don't expect 7 inches to hold very well. The fiberglass you is not the same stuff you use to do custom trunks and stuff. There is premixed fiberglass that comes in 2 stages. Get the fine stuff and use that. When welding, use a mig welder that uses gas. Migs are the easiest to use.

I drive it nice weather only, never in the winter, and it has a garage yes.

And i guess the body shop guy was lying when he said that.
