well heres the story i picked up my 1995 celica gt 5spd on saturday. i drove it around and it worked like a charm. on the following monday night i let my friend drive it and after he drove it the car didnt always shift in to 2nd 4th or reverse when you tried but 1st 3rd and 5th work fine. i am pissed because i was thinking that i could just drop a trd quickshifter in there and it would be back to business. but it didnt so i ended up spending $250 for my quickshifter and wasting my time trying to figure out wat was the problem. so after my sisters boyfriend and i put in the quickshifter and put all the components back together he suggested that my shift linkage cable is messed up. i decide that i'm taking it to a shop and getting it done by a pro becuz i havent been able to drive the car since monday night and its already thursday night. in all my excitement to see how much difference there is in the shifting i take it around the block and on my way home i let my sisters boyfriend drive and he parks and doesnt know he is in 1st and lets go of the clutch and stalls. then we find that the car cant shift correctly and is stuck in the same place as it was when it stalled(you could put it in 1st or 2nd). so i tell my sisters boyfriend to manually put it nuetral and we park it.
can this be a result of the shift linkage cable?? and how much would one be from toyota??? and how much do you think i would pay to get it installed, just estimates?? thanx! |

I had the same problem! I was racing my car at the track and I shifted so hard that it woulndt go into gear.It was a clip that holds the cable so it wont slide thru.Picture a mountain bike and the brakes.the wire cable slides thru the plastic hose but there is a stopper to hold the hose in place so when you press the brake only the wire moves. Same idea!Look in your engine bay and find yous shifter cabes and the clip is flat and sqare with a slot to slide over the wire.It like a $1.00 piece to buy!

the clips are all in place. i checked the shift linkage cable by where it connects to the motor and i found that a piece of wire was sticking out when the car was shifting to the lower gears.

the wire might be getting stuck inside the plastic wrap. And its not sliding freely.
