do all-tracs count?

a guy on alltrac.net (pat chinshu, i think that's how his last name is spelled) has a 5s-gte st185 that is putting down somewhere around 600HP at the wheels last i checked.

i did it wit stock bottom wit over sized piston & it ran hard .....

There is an absolute buttload of misinformation in this thread.
There seems to be more wrong that right in fact....

NO 5S block is aluminum. Period, end of story. None. I don't know where this misconception came from, because I see it alot.

2nd gen 3SGTE and 3SGE do NOT share heads. GTE has TVIS, GE does not. Therefore different head ports.

That's plain wrong.
Pat runs a 3S block. Always has.
The 5S block hits the transfer case.

No 5S and 3S shared blocks. Ever.
The first 2 years the 5S didn't even have a knock sensor...

No S series block is aluminum. They're all cast iron.

There is a slim chance this is right, but I'm pretty sure it's wrong as well.
As far as I know-
The 3rd gen 3SGTE has a slightly different bolt pattern for the exhaust manifold.
The 4th gen is WAY different.

I believe the 5S WAS available in Japan. I might be wrong on that.
Regardless, it was available overseas.
The reason the WRX STI [Jap version] has a 2.0 is for homologation purposes, nothing to do with any tax on larger engines.

Kwanza, you seem to be one of the few [only?] that has a clue in here....

Personally, I like having a larger displacement.
Just 2 words of caution on using the 5S block. Mainly focused on those of you without large sums of money floating around. If you're going to be spending 20k in your engine, these are both moot....

1-It has no oil squirters.
Not the end of the world. Manny is putting some nice power down without them. Others are as well.
And yes they can be machined to accept them. But that's a good bit of time and money. It's not "easy" as someone stated.......
Just one more aspect of reliability, as far as I'm concerned....

2-If you plan on running the stock bottom end, the rod:stroke isn't too good for the higher RPMs the G head can sustain. Nor are the rods/pistons/rings designed for those higher rpms.
