There is a guy in my area selling an 86 SR5 hatch. It doesn't run, but the guy said it was a bad starter, it has a broken side window, he said there was little or no rust, and that the exterior was straight. He said the inside was in great shape for the car, and there were no cracks in the dash.

He is asking $500 obo. Just from what I have said, do you guys think it would be worth much of anything? I figured I could get it running with a blue top for less than a grand...

Honestly, what do you guys think? I thought about offering $300 and a tow out of his yard for it. wink.gif

i'D Sooooo love to have a AE86 to mess around with, and if I could get it running, it'd be hella fun. smile.gif

And chech this out, the guy asked me "you want to turn it into a drifter?" during our conversation. I about hung the phone up, lol.

I think it's funny how you make fun of him for talking about drifting. Why the hell else would you buy an AE86 if you weren't going to drift it?

If the body's straight... I'd buy it. I also happen to have a GTS dash and engine harness... all ready for a GTS conversion... heh.

Also... the AE86 is a great chassis for drifting... but drift cars are traditionally great handling cars... so an AE86 would be an ideal AutoX car. You don't HAVE to drift an AE86... ;] FR, light-weight, great weight balance (almost 50/50), decent power, great aftermarket support... these oldies can still hang with today's best...

Little knowledge on the subject, though Kwanza probably knows more than all in this thread.

The SR5 is indeed a AE86, however, its just the body code. The SR5 has all the same interior, rear axle, and drum brakes of the AE85. It also has the weak, underpowered 1.6L SOHC, similar to the 1.5L in the AE85. So, if you bought it you can do one of two things. 1. change the rear end and interior and engine and have a true AE86!!! or 2. Fix up the outside and tell everyone its a AE86 since they wont know the difference. lol. Go with 1.

well, when dude asked if I was going to turn it into a "Drift beast" it was sorta like him telling me the car could be "fast and furious." you know?

Also, Wouldn't I need a hell of a lot more than the engine harness and ecu?

I woudl need all the accessories, and all the brackets, clutch parts, and possible a different tranny? And also, the speedo would be Way off, there are drums in the back(which i have NO clue where i could find conversion parts), the window is roken out of the car, so there is probably water damage. And from the way the guy was talking, the car is probably worse off than what he said. Apparently, a drunk friend of his broke the window out...

Also, from what I read on the tech section of club4ag.com, the GTS parts swapping is a serious pain. All I'd really do is this: Get a good Blue top in the car, tre-work the interior in black cloth, and run the living hell out of it on the weekends. however, my dad said, and I quote, "you are waisting your time talking to people about cars like that. People even thought corollas sucked back then. that's why i bought a supra!(we had a 84 celica supra when i was really little. smile.gif)

So, there is basically no talking him into it. frown.gif I wish he would let me buy it and park it till I got out of school. If we fixed the engine it would make a great emergency car. Old or not, it's still a flaiming toyota!

That's no lie, I saw a video of 2 AE86's tear a new hole into a R34 Skyline on a racetrack.

p.s. The new qouting is weird at first...

tell me about it. I want a fun little RWD car, but the 240's are more powerful, cheaper to work with, and I am afraid, hundreds of times more plentiful. frown.giffrown.giffrown.giffrown.giffrown.gif

240's are more powerful... with a better suspension set-up... but they're by no means faster short of an engine swap. My AE86 when it was stock with a smallport can kick the crap out of 240's (KA24DE models). To run a 4AG... you will need a GTS tranny, or at least a GTS bellhousing. The speedo will be off, unless you find a correct speedo sensor (SR5 is different)... you'll need to run either a GTS fuel pump or rig up an external pump. You can use the SR5 fuel lines with some work, gotta set-up a fuel filter in the engine bay. The hardest part is finding the wiring harnesses. Everything else isn't too hard to find nor do (you can use a large variety of junkyard parts). SR5->GTS conversions are highly underrated. It's much easier than people think... The engine, depending if you want accessories or not... only needs an alternator. Used engines sometime come with all accesories and manifolds... so you just gotta look. I've purchased in the past, a smallport 4AGE, a B16A, a K20A2 all complete with everything. Anyway, if you do want accessories, the club4ag people can hook you up with that cheap. I may also be able to get some myself... Anyway... I'll just say an SR5->GTS conversion is a lot easier than what it's made out to be. I did mine in couple of days with a lot sitting and drinking...

Yea, I thought about running carbs. that would save me wiring troubles. What about the tranny, how hard are they to find? will the drive shaft of the SR5 work? I wonder how I could fix the speedo... Kwanza: show me the interior of a rolla. wink.gif

What would you guys pay for an old beaten SR5 that is not running?

Yea, I just called the guy back. There is some rust around the right rear wheel well, there are a few small dings, and apparently it has had a big bump in the rear because the hatch is a little crooked.

I don't think it's worth $500
