This morning I had some ideas for the site that I figured I'd share and get your guys' input on.
  • Zip-Code Based Member Search
You guys(in the US...sorry everyone else...but the normal location search will be coming back soon) would be able to input your five-digit zip code. Once enough people input their zip codes, I'd release the search function, which runs on a query that I created a while ago at work that calculates how far zipcodes are from each other. So you could login, then go to the page, choose how big of a radius you'd like to find people within, choose ordering options(member name, registration date, distance from yourself, etc.), and then you could find people close to you.
  • Member Ranking System
My second idea revolved around the idea that having everyone(except management) being an "Enthusiast" is boring. I thought about past attempts we'd made in trying to figure out a ranking system, and today I realized that maybe members could be ranked on a gear system. For example, if someone has under 30 posts or something, their label could be "1st Gear." 30 and over but under 150 could be "2nd Gear," etc. Looking at it now, it seems kind of dumb to me, but I'm curious as to what you guys think, or if you could suggest something else for this.
So let me know what you think. smile.gif

I'm up for the zip code deal. However I do not agree that the ranking system is good. If we could do something other than enthusiast that would be nice. But I fear the first gear and such would be directly related to a person's post count, promoting people's ego's...if ya catch my drift.

first one is good, I like it. but the gear thing, sounds like it would just be changing the word Enthousiast to a gear. I though that mabe rather then going buy how active a person is, it would be on an aproval rating, like every post you make other people (mebers only and not yourself) can chose (approve or disapprove) and your overall rating would be a % based number that shows weither you said something that added to the thread or if you just listed some BS. it would also represent your credabiblity as a person for selling stuff, and how knolagable you are about our cars. (its more or less a glorified poll)

The main problem with the current system is that someone who has been with the site for years would have a really high post number even if they only maid a few posts a week, but someone who has been here for a month and posted 10 a day would not have a high score. and its too easy to hack, i could make a thread and post 1000 times to it and get my rating up high.

I like the zipcode idea but I agree with you about the gear idea being dumb. maybe something like boost pressure either PSI or BAR, like 0 PSI for people with no box; 5 PSI for one; 10 for two; 15 for three; 20 for four; 30 for five. That may not be much better than the gear idea since the majority here doesn't even have turbos but I thought it was worth mentioning. Another thought was that you could leave enthusiast for the newbs and then give the others different names like obsessed, fanatic, fiend, celica whore etc... something along those lines.

i like the zip code search .. but as for the ranking.. i still think members should rank each other...when reach an amount of post you get ranked by either the mods or the other mebers.. so that everyone especially the new people know who knows there stuff...

if a ranking was done like that about knowledge or something, then i think somehow OT topics should be excluded smile.gif

as for the zip code that is an awesome idea, but have you ever though about the map-like idea that gt4oc has?
i used that map for the hatch GB, very helpful.

Nice ideas... I like the whole zip code and others.. But if you look, zip code searching will work with highly populated areas like CA and such. With the whole ranking system, that's a great idea too.. But go with some words like 6GC Newbie or something like that.. Then again, there are people who just post random stuff or smilies to get their post count up.. And can we have something like "your last 10 posts" for lack of memory equipped people like me? I don't know where my 10 posts are.. tongue.gif Thanks

something I would like to see would be links at the bottom of the page

like the ones that are like this:

6G Celicas Forums > Other > Website Discussion

maybe do it level to the "fast reply, Reply, etc" but on the left side.. cuz its kind of a pain to scroll all the way up to the top if you wanna get out of the topic and go back to the 6g Celica Forums... I usally just close the window and click on my fav button but thats a hassle for it to open everytime.... just a though smile.gif

also noticed something wierd the other day... it had to do with someones boxes for post counts.. there was a small vertical black line inplace of the box...might of just been a bug/mess up but was wondering what that was.

Thanks
NEVER-

edit: nevermind just noticed the forum jump at the very bottom wink.gif duh
