Anyone else over brake? Options

Theres nothing really wrong with it, when I used to do it I would just let the car coast for a while coming to a red light, not a whole lot of breaking. Besides nothing is worse then autos on breaks, gotta love that grinding on the oads when your inching forward which I dont actually do casue it drives me nuts!

Anyone else hate that when someone keeps inching forward in an auto like they are going to get through the red light faster or something, especially when theres a car in front. bah!

if you do it right, its no more work on your clutch than an upshift

so far i have driven 9k miles, nearly all of them city miles, in my WRX. i down shift everytime i approach a red light or traffic. still grips the same as day one

hell i would venture to say i downshift nearly as much as i upshift

downshifting is a major part of properly driving a manual transmission vehicle.

it helps slow down the car, it helps control the speed of a car when going down hill, and it helps to cool down the car, since the water pump is turning a lot more than at idle, but the engine isnt making nearly as much heat.

also, the cost of pads and rotors can really add up, especially if you have something like an STI, where a complete brake job is over $1k in parts alone

No, you're downshifting properly. You're not downshifting to lose speed; you're at the correct revs and so it doesn't hurt your clutch. You've missed the point of this thread, the point of engine braking

Engine braking hurts your clutch- if you downshift correctly at the right revs, you won't engine brake at all.

if i am off the gas in 5th, the car will coast for ever

if i rev match and put it in 3rd, the car slows down a good amount when i let off the gas.

i really feel the difference when i brake and downshift at the same time. it seams almost as though the car wont stop if i just put her in neutral and use the brakes

And if you're going 75 in third and downshift into 2nd to use engine braking, you're telling me thats not gonna hurt the clutch and is normal?

here everyone taks about normal things, is it normal to shift to 2 at 75 mph? so why dont you shift to 1 at 75 mph? maybe you will hear big boom

I always down shift, or brake with engine - 2.5 year with my celi, and clutch doesnt slip... Its bigger stress on cluth if it is not relised fully while driving from stop...
