My friend made a custom short shifter by simply cutting it and re-threading it.

I would like to have a shorter shifter just because ours are so high when they are stock... i'm not looking for any performance upgrade just to have it shorter.

Would you guys think this is ok to do?

this is what mine looks like now:

Coomer and digndoug have came up with making a shortshifter from a lancer. you can find one on ebay for like 30 bucks.

Yes and it rocks. This is a true short shifter. Just cutting it will not make it a short shifter, it will just not be as tall. I would say if you have a day off and wanna work on your car, order the lancer shifter from e-bay. it also comes with an i think awsome shifter. Then get some washers and bolts and some cutting and its perfect.

Its shorter shifts and is smoother and lighter then stock.

idk... that seems like a lot of work, plus i would have to pay money to do that... I figured that just cutting it would be cheap and easy... but i just wanted to make sure it wasn't something stupid to do with our cars...

do you have any pictures of the finished product?

ALso cutting it will not make it a short shifter, it will just be lower.

I used to have a cut shifter. it was ok. pretty low but you couldn't just flick your wrist like I can with the twm

if you don't care about the length of the throws why bother spending money/time on it. just cut it imo

would I have to make a custom shift boot plastic cover if I buy that short shifter kit?

Eaither way you will not have to buy a new boot. As of now i am still using my same console and boot, until it gets warmer to finish my custom one.

Also for just cutting it, yes it should be fine. I wouldnt sugest cutting off more then 1 inch.

Hmm a little off topic but I always get told by people who drive my car that my shifter is really short. I thought I had the stock shifter but maybe I don't... Was wondering what the easiest way to tell is. Or if someone could just have a look at this picture and tell me if it looks like stock height...

Our cars do have a nice throw to them stock. I put a GReddy/Trust shift knob on mine, and it shortened it up a little and feels really good now. I think I have a pic of it in my profile if anybody's interested in seeing it.

EDIT- Nevermind, i lied. I dont have a pic of it up. wink.gif
