I read on here that there is something you can do to the st185 tranny so it doesn't turn the drive shaft anymore for the rear wheels. I can't find the thread anymore but has anyone done this and how does it work out? Also anybody have anymore info on this?

Not advisable. Use the MR2T tranny. Or, you can gamble and use the GT (S-54) tranny.

I said gamble. When dozens of people have had problems with using the 5s tranny in a 3s swap, I would say using one is a gamble.
I also think its a gamble to use a 91-92 mr2t tranny because they are notorious for syncro wear. The best bet is to get a 93+ mr2t tranny. -------------------- QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this. |

Using the st185 tranny would be a thing of indestructibility. That tranny should be good for over 700 hp. You need to use the st185 casing and mr2 lsd differential. This way you don't have to switch the shift actuator to the other side. And I believe you need to use the bellhousing side of the mr2 tranny with the diff. You would still need a set of mr2 inner shafts and st185 outer shafts for axles, but you would need the same combo if you used the mr2 tranny. This or the mr2 tranny(with st185 actuator and shift levers) would be a great bet.

FYI, the E154 (GT4 AWD trans) and E153 (MR2 turbo, Camry V6 trans) are essentially the same thing with different styles of diffs (FWD vs AWD)... Using the AWD tranny is not adviseable, and even if a person would be willing to go the lengths you describe to modify the E154, you'll still need to source an MR2 Turbo case and complete diff, not exactly easy to do. Usually people would rather sell a complete tranny than just parts of a tranny. As for the shift linkasge issue, who says it must be an MR2 tranny? Camry and Solara V6 5 speed trannies work also and their linkages are correct for a FF set-up. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

sorry guys...i quoted the wrong guy...lol
celica3sgte, i understand that you have been using the 5sfe tranny for while now....how has it been holding up for you? i think that a lot of these tranny problems people report are either missdiagnosed or trannys that were on their way out anyway. most of the type people think their synchros are shot because they cant shift too good. a lot of that stuff has to do with cable bushings, clutch adjustments, a clutch that is about to fail, or oil in the tranny. you really cant expect your 200,000mile tranny, that has never had its oil changed, to hold up to the added power, but if you ketp your car in good shape, and you dont have crazy miles on your car, i think you will be fine with a 5s tranny. So far my GT tranny has endured my driving. Right now I only have around 225 whp. None of the tuners down here are using the GT tranny above 300 whp. They are using the alltrac tranny with lsd or mr2 tranny with alltrac pieces.
Exactly kwanza, Either way you go, 1) using the mr2 tranny or 2) using the alltrac tranny you are gonna need to get both trannies, so it's personal preference. If using the mr2 tranny, noone will sell you just the shift actuator, and shift levers from an alltrac tranny. Most likely you'll have to buy the whole tranny. Personally, I don't want to drill and tap any new holes to align new pieces. That's one advantage of using the st185 tranny. You don't need to remove any of these pieces because the motor isn't a mid-engine and nothing needs to be changed around. Either tranny will work for a modded 3s swap. And everyone has their own opinion, but you can't change the fact that the st185 tranny is has beefier parts and is stronger. |

They're essentially the same thing (E153, E154)... so strength would only apply to the S54 vs E153/E154... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... Not only that but you only have to drill one thing on the MR2 tranny to convert it. The fact that the MR2 is mid-engine is basically making it a FWD tranny. The entire setup is in the rear, not the front, so its a FWD tranny, in the back. The conversion is not hard, alot easier than switching differentials and bellhousings.
