yep so i found out the head gasket is blown and should be replaced as well as the serpentine belt. I am so mechanically stupid that it hurts to think i cant replace the head gasket myself but i need this car to last untill i get out of college so for another 3 years. oh if anyone one wants to know the mileage its 170k now Woot. The people who looked at the car estimated around $450 for the replacing of it. Just wanted to know if this is reasonable price cause i read earlier post about crazy insane prices and then people who replace the headgasket themselves which I would love to do but know nothing about doing it.

Very few people in this world who aren't mechanics will ever replace a head gasket so don't feel bad. Celicas don't have serpentine belts. That is one belt to drive all the accessories. Celicas have a different belt for the A/C, alternator, and water pump. You should get them all replaced at the same time. It's not very expensive. Maybe $100 bucks.

450 is not a bad price at all if you dont have the time or tools to do it. When I blew the headgasket on my old car I was quoted at nothing less than 800, and this was on an '87 1.6L nissan with a throttle body injector. I ended up doing it myself and rebuilt the head while I was at it. It took a good amount of time, but i had the tools, a driveway, and a car to use in the meantime... The headset only cost about 80 bucks, so thats all it cost me. I think ours run for about 120.

you cant buy a new engine for 800 bucks.. You can buy a used engine for around 800 though.. and there is no garentees that this used engine has less wear then yours.

I doubt when he says he could get a new engine for that price that he means buy a brand new car and take that brand new 0 miles enigne...

When he says new engine he means a swap enigine that would obviously have been used. and yes you can get one for under 800...check ebay

450$ for a HG job is not bad at all. If it needs to be done then get it done. Otherwise sale me the car for 500$ and i will put the 40$ HG on it myself smile.gif

u can get a used 5sfe with bout 30k on it for under 650 in alot of places my point is i think spending 450 on fixing a head gasket is just too high for an engine of that age...see if at least you could get it rebuilt for round 800-1000 and do everything at once if ur gonna spend 450 on just a gasket
