This dog got f'd up. Besides my dog is a Jack Russell/bull mix and the only time she hurts anything is when she's in heat and my Cairn terrier wants some.

I live with a couple of dogs who are just frightening to most people.

Cross a pit bull (think it's American terrier) and a Great Dane and you get 120 pounds of tough bitch known as Belle. She's the matriarch of my sister's, um, pack of three.

She's big, can be aggressive and is protective. We wouldn't trust her around kids and we're careful around other animals. Never had a problem with her because we're responsible.

Here's brilliance though -- my city council bans pit bull breeds from off-leash parks, and simultaneously makes it illegal to not exercise your dog.

Meanwhile, the only dogs I've ever been bitten by were those small enough to use as a football. I'm a lot more worried about getting bitten by a five to 30-pound dog than I am a 90-pound dog.

Look at Italy, they ban any breed found to have bitten a human. Recently banned corgis, the favourite pets of Queen Elizabeth.

A really good friend of mine was attacked by 2 pit bulls she had $50k of medical expenses, had to go to physical therepy and all that crap. They had to shoot one of the dogs in the head just to get them off of her. She didnt do anything to the dogs, all she was doing was checking her mail. Needless to say the owners of the dogs are paying alot of money.

And before you say that she provoked the dogs somehow, she has 2 pitbulls of her own, and no they weren't with her at the time.

my dog is a pit bull lab mix

very nice dog to people he knows, but he is VERY protective of his home and family.

i wont trust him around small dogs, or infants. the small dogs usually bite him and cause a nasty retaliation, and as for the infants, he is simply too rough to be around a baby

since he was a puppy i would always tug on his ears and tail and playfully slap him around, just incase a little kid were to ever get close enough to hit him or pull on something.

i also would take his food away from him while he was eating, or stick my hand/foot in the bowl to make him used to it. no matter what i do to him while he is eating, he just waits for me to stop. if i stick my hand in his mouth, he just spits it out.

we did the same for my dog's two brothers. they all weigh about 100lbs each and for the most part act the same, with my dog being the most aggressive

In other words, you properly socialized him. That's the major problem, owners not realizing that their dogs will be scared of anything unfamiliar and fear in the animal world is dealt with violently.

Rjb's story is case in point. She did provoke the dogs, by being unfamiliar or different and -- if this was an apartment or condo building -- by being in an area they considered their own. Had the owners educated their dogs to accept strangers, to not be defensive in common areas, your friend likely wouldn't have been attacked. There are bad dogs, but those are individuals. More often it's ignorant owners.

Unfortunately, pit bull breeds, because they have a reputation now for being violent, are chosen by those who want a violent dog. Generally that means an uneducated owner who likes seeing their dog act aggressively. That said, they're still not nearly as prone to biting as breeds such as the cocker spaniel, it's just because their bites cause so much more damage that they are reported.

She was in her yard, the 2 pit bulls that attacked her lived down the street 2 houses. Basically these dogs never should have been out, unleashed or not behind a fence.

I just saw on the news that a pitbull attacked a woman's car. It bit the fender above the wheel well and dented and scraped up the fender. Looked to be about a $1k to $1500 worth of damage.

Then I'd go with the being unfamiliar -- which leads back to a lack of socialization.

One of my sister's dogs grew up in Vancouver's East End -- completely strung out drug addicts don't bother her. It's just a matter of exposure leading to a certain comfort level.

I used to have a very protective shar-pei.... but he was nice as long as you respected him... He died of cancer at 4.5 yrs old. That sucked. My new shar-pei is a flowered sharpei and he's a doll. He's also the worlds biggest pansy. But I think those laws are **** personally.

I think there are many of each. I have a friend that had to put down his beagle! The dog was seriously psychotic and ended up almost ripping off his 1 year old son's finger. I could go on and on about the things this dog did but suffice it to say that the family had to put the dog in a seperate room when they had guests because it would attack anyone it didn't know.

They had offers from dog lovers to take the dog but the vet told them it would be irresponsible to pass the dog on to anyone. So, the dog got the death penalty.

Hell, my chiuauas are more aggresive than a pit bull..

I think people just consider pit bulls bad dogs because of their lock jaw problem.. My friend owns one down in Vegas and they brought it up in a social invironment, when it was a puppy it would be around other dogs of various sizes. They would sniff butts, and all that jazz and get along just fine, and to this day that dog has yet to show one ounce of aggresion towards anybody, even children.

I don't know if anyone in the government has heard.. but Dobermans and believe it or not, Chows are more aggressive than pit bulls.....
