Ok guys, I know there's a million threads about this I've searched and read things about this and the clock and everything all day long. What is the best method to make the climate control unit and the selector lights turn blue? I've seen painting, drilling out the bulb holes for LEDs, complete new wiring of LEDs independent of the system, etc etc. Which one works the best and looks the best? If painting it is going to look the same as drilling and changing the bulbs and all that then I'll just paint it.

Otherwise I think the only way for the smaller selection LEDs on the buttons is to just change all the 3mm LED's, but I might try using some glass paint on the buttons first.

And if anyone has pics of the final product to compare how each works that would be amazing, that's been the hardest thing for me to find.

I ended up with about 20 LEDs inside my unit plus a multi-LED 194. I'll take some pictures when it's dark outside. I just finished it last night. I'm pleased with the results. Each button has 2 LEDs one for backlighting of the button and one to indicate that it's on. If you were closer to Wichita I'd do it for you.

This is rocky2006's

It looks just like mine..

I used about 10-15 blue LEDs, and just drilled a 3mm hole, and replaced the flat green LEDS with round 3mm blue LEDS, i got from ebay, $12 shipped for 100 with resistors.

These are some really quick pictures. My climate control seems really bright compared to Rocky's picture. I wonder what value his resistors were. When I get some more time I'll take some better pictures.

WannabeGT4, yours is EXACTLY how I want to make mine look so I can match a nice Pioneer iPod ready CD head unit to it.

How hard was that to do, and HOW did you make the clock blue too?

The climate control was a bit difficult. The 5mm LEDs had to be modified to fit were the original rectangular shaped LEDs were. All of the bulbs were scrapped and more modified 5mm LEDs were used to backlight each button. Those LEDs all had to have resistors soldered to them and then I soldered the leads to the contacts for one of the original bulbs. Since 3mm LEDs are now readily available I'd say just buy them instead of filing the 5mm ones down to a recatangular shape. In order to keep the backlighting LEDs in place I just glued them to the bottom portion of the black "light tunnel" that goes over the indicator LEDs. I'll have to draw something or take pictures to explain exactly what I did but It turned out exactly how I wanted.

For the clock there is a how-to on here somewhere. After I removed the brown "filter" I just used some blue and purple filters to make it look blue. If your light doesn't have a green tint to it when you take out the brown filter all you will need is the blue filters.

I think you'd be missing out on a fun project but if that's what you want to do I'm sure we could arrange something. Between the climate control, my computer, and PS2 controllers I've use all my blue LEDs. I'd have to order some more. Then I'd be ready to do another climate control. Let me know if you'd like for me to do it. If you want to try it yourself you can get the LEDs from ebay or http://www.oznium.com.

ok I've got one last question before I start to work on mine. On the temperature knob, is there any way to keep the hot side red? So it's blue to red like it comes stock, but convert the rest of the panel to blue?

Not easily. You'd have to shield all of the blue light from the red portions and supply it with it's own regular/white light. My idea was to take the scan I have of the climate control and replace the lines with numbers 60 thru 90 in five or ten degree increments. Kinda like the automatic climate control in some of the GT Fours and JDM/Euro Spec Celicas.

mines not as bright as wannabegt4's, but imo it's bright enough. here is the thread of the final product, and the thread for the making is in a link on the 2nd page - http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showto...climate+control

so converted my clock and key light to blue today, likin the looks so far. I think I'm going to get an LED for the keyring when i order my gauge LEDs to use instead of the gel. I haven't looked at it in the dark yet but so far I like it!

ok, after studying this a few hours yesterday, this is what i came up with.

I need
--3 #194 inverted LED's for the guage cluster, these are just "plug and play" replacement LED's, right?
--1 #74 LED for keyring, a small modification to fit.
--1 #74 LED for cigarette lighter, a small mod to fit.
--a few 3mm LED's for the buttons on the climate control, solder onto original contacts
--3 5mm LED's for the background light on the climate control, solder onto original contacts
--a 3 mm LED for the power window switch
--and finally replace the filter on the clock from the brown one to a blue.

which is better the #194 matrix LED's or the inverted ones?
what "Axial Luminous Itensity" should the different LED's have

have i missed anything or do you have any other ideas?

sorry if this has been brought up a hundered times before, but i have seen so many different solutions and i'd like to get this right since i have to order the LED's from the states

I'd like to know also, it would be very helpful for all of this information to be present at one time.

"matrix" LEDs have zero hot spots in the guage cluster. I'm very happy with mine that I got on Ebay. As for the inesity I have no idea. I got the only ones on ebay.

I used two LEDs per button. one for each buttons indicator light and one for the backlighting. The backlighting LEDs each have a resistor and are soldered to the contacts of the original bulb's "socket".

Any more questions just ask.

But there's not a backlight bulb under each button originally right? confused.gif
If not, which contacts did you mean you soldered them to?

thanks

That's right. I ran the leads from the LEDs to the contacts where one of the incandescent bulbs were originaly twisted in place. You'll understand once it's opened.
