this is gonna be a b* to do.

the last time i removed one of this bad boys was to get a chain tool, that held the outside diameter still while I cranked away. Since you dont want to rent a tool, you might be able to get a rope and let it wrap around the pully a couple times and then tie the other end to the frame? I dont recomend jaming anything into the flywheel cuz it takes alot of force to get the pulley off, you might end up breaking something else (ex. flywheel).

good luck

ok well assuming you have a flywheel meaning manual trans, just pull the parking brake, tranny in 5th gear, and take a impact wrench to the crank pulley bolt if you have issues getting the pulley off theres a 3 arm pulley puller at autozone for i think 12$ and for the impact wrench if u dont have one go to harbor freight (i dont know if youll have one but ive got one in WA and ive seen em in FL) hope this helps.

Or, you can put a 6 point socket on the crank bolt, with a rachet or breaker-bar against something solid (the floor or whatever). Then disconnect the coil so that the engine can't start, hop in the car, and crank the engine for about 1/2 a second. CRACK! The bolt will be loose! smile.gif

That's called a starter bump by the way and is used quite a bit.

Then you'll need a typical puller to get the crank off.

i once accidently did that. But i was not sure if that was safe for the starter.

its not but most of the time it wont even care and you should be perfectly fine. i still prefer my method for manuals...
