So I had an AMD Athlon T-bird 1.4GHz processor (100mhz fsb 14x multiplier) Socket A/462. I need to replace it. My motherboard supports 100 and 133mhz fsb through jumper settings. I'd like to put in a processor with a 166.5mhz fsb since I can get it cheaper than the discontinued t-bird plus it has a 512k L2 cache compared to the 128k of the t-bird. My question is will this processor work only at a lower frequency since the fsb is restricted by the motherboard? Every thing else seems compatible.
New processor specs: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...417#DetailSpecs I realise it says 333mhz fsb but in actuality it's 166.5 since there is a signal sent on the rising and falling side of the sine wave so in effect it acts as 333mhz. The processor is designed to be run at these settings: Multiplier of 11.5 x 166.5mhz FSB = 1914mhz I'd be running this: Multiplier of 11.5 x 133mhz FSB = 1529mhz I know I'd be loosing 400mhz created by the bottle neck of my motherboard but I really don't feel like buying ram and a new motherboard right now. It is a possibility in the near future though. This post has been edited by WannabeGT4: Aug 28, 2005 - 10:34 PM -------------------- ![]() Project ST204.5 99.88946% complete... |

I hope you're right. I just ordered it this morning. I don't think the AMD 64 comes in Socket A. I'm trying to spend as little money on this computer as possible without downgrading from the 1.4ghz.

Nope 64's come in a socket 939 and 754. Check the manufacture website to see if you can up your board into the 166 clock speed and run the chip at full potential... though it will bottle neck if you have pc 133 ram anyways which you probobly do.

Yeah already checked. 133 is the top. It's a cheep MoBo from Trigem. I'll probably end up replacing it too after what I found out about the Santafe-KM. It seems that they used some caps that will literaly explode after less than 4000 hrs of use. The XT983 from HP seems to be a lemon according to the recent information I found. Oh well, It's served me well for the past 4 years so I can't really complain.

eh, if you fried the cpu, I would replace the motherboard as well, good onces are not very costly and its always a good time to upgrade when something goes out out ya.
side note: newegg.com is a pretty good site, you might also wana try tigerdirect.com there pretty good as well. This post has been edited by creis: Aug 30, 2005 - 11:40 PM -------------------- ![]() |

If you replace your motherboard get a MSI or Asus. My personal preference cost to preformance wise is the MSI's. Reliable as hell and rock stable.

Newegg is my supplier of choice. I'll be going with an ABIT board if anything. They are just so damn easy to Overclock with using their 'guru' MoBos.

ive had a couple abit boards... they arnt too shabby but msi does have the automatic overclock feature up to 25% automaticaly if the processor is under stress. Though I think other boards do that now too but msi does a nice job of it. Very stable even under 25% increased load

Asus 30% more price wise though and rated on par with msi. Though asus runs a 3 year warrenty instead of 1 year.

I don't care what you guys do, just don't got the Pricewatch way. They cramp your style more than hell itself.

I wouldn't be surprised if more start to go. That one was the only one that was leaking and the only one that appeared to be "pregnant" so who knows maybe it'll last me another 4 years. -------------------- ![]() Project ST204.5 99.88946% complete... |
