I doubt im the only one who passes people on double yellows. I don't do it all the time but if i want to get by someone and its clear ahead I go for it...a few times when it wasn't clear but I set up the overtaking well so no worries. Surprises the hell out of people though! I wana hear some driving stories and habits, tendencies etc... I guess my problem is i cut corners alot and take apexes like its a one lane road...wups

I have done this exactly one time. It was to prove a point and I only did it because the guy upset the hell out of me. 45mph 2 lane road, he cuts almost right in front of me from a stop sign and as he sees me go to pass him, he decides to try and beat me. He was driving an early 90's Escort, and I had my Celica(had it about 6 months at the time). I dropped gears again, and left him standing there.
One thing you have right though, is how much it surprises people when you pass them. I pass on dotted yellow practically daily. 90% of the time, the driver getting passed has a 'wtf is he doing, he's gonna kill us both' look on their face. Around here it's pretty much suicide to cut corners on the roads that it would be fun on. Almost every sharp turn is completely blind, and on roads where traffic is just common enough to keep you from doing it. |

Hi, Have a look at the pic I have posted on my profile.
Yes if you are wondering.. it is a Gen 6 Celica..... I hate to spoil the fun, but sometimes you have to remember they are only made of steel, plastic & rubber. Take care out there. |

They're called No Passing Zones for a reason: so you don't drive head on into a car while going 85MPH.

I've seen many wrecks(mostly from less than 300 yards behind), which is why I avoid things like passing on double yellows and cutting corners.
But on to a story I remembered. The Celica saved my life. I left work early to get a part from the dealer(my clutch from TRD Japan, but that's a whole other story), on my way I have to take the highway for about 8 miles or so. I'm about to go under a bridge, when the truck 3 spots up gets cut off by someone who merged and cut over to the left lane without looking. The truck(mid 80's F-150) slams his brakes and starts spinning. So it's like dominoes the way people are slamming their brakes. I start sliding, rotating a bit clockwise, the guy in front of me starts skidding the other way(counterclockwise). It looks like everything is going to be ok, that's when I see the girl behind me not stopping fast enough. Almost like magic, the guy in front of me dips onto the median, giving me just enough room to swing back the other way onto the median myself. At this point the guy in front of me guns it and goes under the still spinning truck(front of truck about a foot from his car). I follow, with the back of the truck coming around at ME(missing by less than 6 in), and pull over far enough ahead of the truck so I don't get hit. Amazingly enough, no cars touched, and no one hit ANYTHING. The truck gave chase to the guy that cut him off. At this point my knuckles were white, my hands were a bit shaky, and my adrenaline was at an all time high. I let the truck pass, and then proceeded to the dealer. To this day, that is the most insane experience I have ever had. All my days of learning to control my car came together in one insane moment. I hope it never happens again, but at the same time there is no high like a perfectly executed save fueled by pure instinct and adrenaline. |

This story just goes to show that by replacing stock parts with performance parts can save your life. By having a car that handles better, stops faster and has better acceleration, it just gives you that edge in a situation like this. |

My wife & I acctually have to give some credit to our Gen 6 for saving our hides.
The day after we got married we drove our 97 Celica SX (USA=GT) on our honeymoon to Queensland (About 1500Klm trip.) Half way there just out side Sydney we were traveling at 115Klm/h (Sorry don't know what that is in Miles) along a 2 lane highway when a semi-trailer (18 Wheeler) pulls out infront of us into our lane. It happened so fast & he came out of no where. All I remeber seeing is the side if the Semi (Gas Tanks on the side) from there it was pure reaction. I almost locked the steering wheel at 115Klm/h hard right into the next lane. (Lucky there was no one overtaking me). Then hard left to strighted her up again.....all without touching the brakes or getting a chance to release the accelerator. Our cousin who had come down to Melbourne for our wedding was following behind us on her way back to Sydney (She Drives a 94 Celica) says that if that was her she would have hit the semi or flipped the car trying the same manover. At the time I had the factory springs still on, but had a set of Toyo Proxes Directional tyres which where very low on tred at the time. The handling of the car combined with the good quality tyres I think where the only thing that kept us on the road and in the upright position. Im not saying the Celica is a master handler, but yes it is better built & reacts better than standard cars in those types of emergency situations. I was also lucky it was a dry day and the road was in good condition... Cheers |

???? At the time I was all stock except for the rims and the stereo. I could have been in a 3rd gen and still been ok. |

I love speeding anywhere and hate being stuck in slow traffic. But I won't break the Double lines rules like others do to overtake. Unless its around midnight then I will take up the whole road and put me foot flat to the floor. One area I go through I average 170ks (105Mph) its got good corners and sweeping straits.
I love that streach of road. ![]() ![]() |

I live in L.A. to many cars to do anything... I usually end up blocking A holes that try and stay in a merge lane till it ends, passing the point everyone else is merging at and cutting a bunch of people off, even though I might ocasionaly do this myself. but thats me, and I drive a celica so its allright. I cant really afford a ticket so I try to not break to many laws. But I have a few stories...
Just today I was getting on the freeway merging all the way to the left to get in the carpool lane (you can only enter and exit at certain places) and im coming up to the enter part, there is one of those new accords flying up and I have had my blinker on for some time, so I still make my lane change regardless because the carpool is 2 lanes so he could have been in the other lane. The damn freak flashes his brights at me and I say to myself, hell no he didnt... I was going about 75mph and he was going like 85-90, so I hit my brakes and slow to about 60, so he finaly changes lanes and I drop gears and floor it and he does the same, needless to say the celica beat the hell out of that family car and he broke off at about 100... Another time a cut this guy off that wasflying up on the shoulder passing everyone in traffic like he was above them or something. Well the guy is forced to get behind me and changes into the lane to my left and paces my car (driving one of those big size trucks, a dodge or something, basically an suv without the backseats) anyways the guy looks all pissed at is pointing at me like he is gona kill me or something, I just start laughing at this point... Anyways the whole way down the freeway he is pacing my car, blocking traffic in his lane cause it was going faster then my lane. He just keeps looking and pointing and i'm just laughing at this guy, my exit finally comes up and i give the guy a nice big friendly wave goodbye... L.A. is full of A hole people, there everywhere, and I have to deal with them everyday. I think having a horn and high beams should be cleared for regular nice people only... |

Ja! LA full of crappy ass drivers! I drive from WeHo, to the Valley, to Santa Monica, to Long Beach all in the same day, and these people are nucking futs, no joke. Old people, crazy asians (no offense, but it's a statistical fact here) soccer mom/women (once again no offense, but it's pretty freakin common. I have tons of stories, but one that sticks out is my fault
![]() Any of you LA folk know about Mulholland drive (if you don't, we need to go for a little drive ![]() ![]() |

I had an experience like this once...right after I got my car (about 3 months) and i decided to see how well it handled at fast speeds on curvy back roads! I was on a narrow 2 lane road about 2:00 in the morning and was going about 70 mph when I hit this like almost 90 degree turn that I had forgotten about. Pulled a 180 and stopped right on the white line about 6 inches away from a like 5 ft. deep ditch! It was pretty freaky! |

I actually have not driven on Mulholland yet.... I have driven down sunset right before the beach, its pretty curvy, but I'm guessing nothing like mulholand. I have absolutly bald tires, preet much slicks, about 1/4 -1/8 inch tread left so I cant really drive to fast or curvy.
By the way I drive from downtown, to torrance (15miles) then to brentwood (20 miles on the 405) then back to downtown (15 miles) everyday. So Rivo i know your pain. Everyone here sucks! asses driving down the emergency lane, people cutting into lines in front of everyone thats been waiting, people just doing what they want when they want! ITS INSANITY! and there is never a cop when you need em... |
