shifter problems, 1st to 2nd gear gate Options

i had a new transmission put in this summer, and a little while ago, something weird started happening w/ my shifter. When i went from first to second, there would be like, a knot or bump between the gears, so i kinda had to go around it. If i tried to go through it, it would sorta grind then pop back out. I took it by the guy who put in my transmission and he said it was a problem w/ the gate. What I'm trying to ask is, if i got a 7th gen short shifter, would that fix the problem along w/ me getting a new shifter so i dont have to spend money to fix my old one, then spend more money afterward to put in a short shifter? Or does the gate have absolutely nothing to do w/ the short shifter at all?
