protein shakes, while they do offer a complete, convenient protein source, are not in any nutrional sense advantageous over other complete sources such as meat, eggs, dairy. in fact those other source are often better because they supply other nutrients as well. that said, i buy EAS chocolate premium whey, tastes alright. by the way that is way more protein than necessary to sustain protein anabolism in muscle tissue, although it doesnt hurt either. 150g daily is more than enough despite what anybody else tells you. i hope you know you also have to exercise consistently and properly to gain lean mass or these drinks aint going to help either way

Protien shakes are good, but your body will poop out what is not being used. You need to calculate your daily metabolic rate. Look it up on goolge and you will find a calculator. Then you just need to eat more calories than what your daily metabolic rate is; but it has to be good food. The healthy stuff. Lots of tuna, and skim milk do the trick nicely too. If you are craving a snack a 1/2 cup of low fat cottage cheese will do the trick. Lots of protien there. Peanut butter is a good source of protein also. What is your goal? Are you wanting to get bulk to get cut? if you want to get cut, then lay off the protein and just lift and do lotsa cardio. If you want bulk do light cardio and lift crazy. you want to challenge your muscles but doing more sets than reps, with heavier weight. Like around 70-90% of your max weight that you can do for that exercise. For bulk you want to atleast do exercises that target the different angles of that muscle Ex(incline, decline and flat bench) works upper, lower and middle of your pectoralis. Biceps have the 2 heads so you need to hit hose both...
Sorry I got on a tangent there. Protein is good from a shake, but be careful that you aren't pooping it out I suggest strawberry or vanilla. that way you know if your poop is another color. If you have any questions don't hesitate to pm me. This is what I majored in in college and what I am certified in.. Jeremy This post has been edited by Jeremy1210: Dec 14, 2005 - 9:25 PM |

Creatine sucks man, dont waste your time/money.
For protein shakes, just make sure you've got something thats 100% whey isolate, thats the good ****. My shake is 23g of protein per 25g serving (one scoop) (Its by optimum nutrition, there whey isolate, chocolate flavour, very tasty), but i mean, you can just use a bigger scoop to get 30-40 grams of protein. So looking at the amount of protein per scoop is pointless, its the ratio of protein per serving size thats important. If your real skinny, buy protein with carbs in it. Optimum whey protein is really good stuff, They also have a powder that has 20g carbs in it for every 40 grams protein. Keep in mind your body can only process about 30g protein every two hours for the average guy. for more muscle mass, you'll want to take in aproximately 1g of protein per lb of body weight, I.E. a 170 pound guy would try to get in 170g of protein per day, with as much of it coming from natural sources as possible, (eggs, chicken, turkey, tuna, wild samon, cottage cheese etc.). Another good tip is to take a shake right before bed, Because your muscles grow when your sleeping, not when your at the gym. If your wanting to pack on size, you gotta EAT, having a caloric surplus is the best way to pack on size. that means very little or no cardio at all. Your heart rate should be pretty high while your working out anyway so that will be enough to keep your heart healthy, and your diet should have plkenty of heart healthy foods too, so leave the running for march and april when you prep for summer. Don't "LOAD" with Creatine. Your body only absorbs so much, and the rest is pissed out. Its a waste of creatine and a waste of ur money.

If ur not gonna eat ur protein, then dont bother trying to gain muscle. QUOTE(Tech9ine @ Dec 14, 2005 - 7:36 PM) Creatine sucks man, dont waste your time/money. ive always heard more reps over the weight
i thought if you cant rep it then you arent gaining anything by doing it i was taught that you need to find a median between weight and reps to maximize your workout for example reping 100 lbs 25 times or lifting 225 once... neither is really beneficial because repping 100 is too easy and lifting 225 is too hard so you only do it once so you dont get any affect from it... so you find a weight inbetween like 150 or 175 and lift is lets say 12 times. wouldnt that be better for you i might be wrong. some really built guy at the cga taught me this last summer. so if im wrong tell me |

To build muscle you have to put it under extreme stress. I.E. lift heavy, Lift a weight where you can get around 6-8 reps out of, if you can't do 6, lower the weight a bit, if you can hit 8, up the weight. If you have a high motabalism (like i do), Dont worry about high reps, you'll stay pretty cut regardless of your workout regimen. If your having alot of trouble gaining mass, try eating some ice cream right before bed, and eat like a horse right in the morning, Oatmeal is a good thing for breakfast, high in fiber and lots of carbs, throw some multigrain toast with peanut butter, tall glass of skim milk, and a piece of fruit (i like bananas in my oatmeal), and you got yourself a killer breakfast. And if your eating alot and not gaining weight, then eat more, I finally grasped that concept and it was actually hard for me to eat so much, but my appetite quickly got used to it, and now im finally gaining weight, (good lean muscle mass weight).
Make sure your eating veggies and good complex carbs throughout your meals too, not just protein. Let me clarify, i think creatine sucks because in order to get it to work, you have to drink putloads of water, and its not comfortable. When i was on creatine, it tasted awful, and i was pissing every 20 minutes, and that wasnt worth it to me to gain 5 lbs in a month and a half just to lose it once i got off the creatine. Thats why i dont like creatine. Some guys like it, not me though. This post has been edited by Tech9ine: Dec 15, 2005 - 1:38 AM |

If anyone has ever heard of Muscle Milk, it's what I take. You can get it at GNC for a decent price. I take that, and eat about 140 grams of protein per day.
The last two months I've gained almost 10 pounds, and I have an extremely fast metabolism. I work out 3 days a week, 50 min. at a time. I don't over do it, but I do enough. I've had great results from my plan. edit: muscle milk tastes awesome too. best i've ever had This post has been edited by Verde97: Dec 15, 2005 - 9:40 PM -------------------- ![]() |
