 car alarm, it doesnt arm |

I have no idea how it works and i didnt get it installed. That previous owner did that. I can open and lock my doors with the remote but the alarm doesnt engage. I tested it by starting my car after arming it but the car started and alarm didnt go off. I even banged my car a few times to set it off.
Does my car alarm need to get its batteries changed  ?Thanks for any advice |
