So I've got a really easy question for the mechanics out there. How necessary is it to have that small rubber seal that goes around the timing belt cover? Mine got killed when I took the cover off, and I'm wondering if it's worth paying for, and waiting 4 days to get a new one, or if I can just go without it.

You cxan probably get away without using one, but it is there for a reason. And simply for peace of mind, I would always fit one myself.

Okay, nevermind I guess. I was willing to wait 5 days to get it, but my dad was impatient...so we just used Goop as a seal...lol biggrin.gif

It wasn't too hard. It took me and my dad a while though, only cause it was the first timing belt we'd ever replaced on a Toyota.(it was my first ever) The whole thing cost $31.(the price of the belt) I don't know about doing a how-to article...maybe I would if I'd taken pictures while I was doing it...plus I felt like quite the amature myself. biggrin.gif If you're planning on doing one, I'd be more than willing to tell you what I can though. wink.gif

the thing thats gonna start squeeling then seize in about 10K miles (or less) causing your Tbelt to jump teeth or break and leave you stranded by where jesus lost a sandle.

Any mechanic worth his salt will change the water pump and tensioner when swapping a cam belt.

Well, I'm not a afraid to admit it, I'm no salty mechanic. My dad and I work on cars for the fun of it, and I continue to learn as a go. Considering I own a 86 CRX, a 90 CRx, a 91 Civic, and now a 94 Celica, and not one of them was running when I bought it, and now they're all running, plus have died several times, and been fixed since then, and seeing as I've probably spent less on all of them put together than you have on just your exterior mods, I think I'm doing pretty well. tongue.gif Anyway, I'm not offended, if you'd like to actually tell me what your talking about, instead of throwing pithy comments, I'd appreciate it. I just replaced it, and know what everything looks like, I just hardly know names for any parts, so you're welcome to enlighten me...you just might have to use small words. rolleyes.gif

That small rubber seal is just to keep water and other road crap from getting inside of the cover and contaminating the belts and pulleys.

Think of it as a oil drain plug gasket. Sure you could go with out it but there is no guarantee that oil wont get out.

The biggest reason people change the water pump with the timing belt is because when the water pump does go out the timing belt will go with it. Thats exactly what happend to mine last year.

Hmmm.....that makes sense. I think that's what happened to an old tercel I used to have. The engine was fine though. Anyway, the girl I just bought it from said it was replaced a while ago, so we'll just have to hope it lasts another year till I get another engine in there, won't we. wink.gif
