I'm not sure if this is the right section, and i've seen a post similar to this before, but I cant find it again, and I dont know how to search for it again..it had a scale for knowledge, with 0 being something like someone who brings to the dealership for everything, and 10 being someone like Dr./Manny/Jeff etc...
Im looking at eventually doing a 3's swap, and im trying to learn and research as much as i can, and as far as i can gather, its a fairly straight-forward swap, unbolt/unplug old engine, pull it, drop in 3's, and bolt/plug her in, with the only major difficulty comming from the wiring harness...thing is im not the most knowledgeable when it comes to cars...I took mechanics in high school, so i have a basic understanding of how to do things, oil changes, minor tune-ups, ive done brakes on my previous car, found the tranny flush on the DIY and did that, but thats about the extent of my abilities. Would you guys say that something like this is beyond my capabilities? I just was wondering how much the rest of you know about cars, maybe how much you knew before and after you did the swap (if youve done one) Thanks in advance!!!!! Well give it 30 seconds and lagos will chime in this is his favorite topic!
So anyhow... Doing a swap on a 6gc gt is not too difficult. It all depends on how much mechanical skill you have. But the nice part about this board is theres quite a few writeups on how to swap in a 3sgte motor into a 6gc. It makes it really simple that you can use the same transmission. It also makes it really simple that you can go ahead and get a wiring harness made for the car (dr.tweak/Dgperformance). Its not really that hard out of all the swaps I have seen. This has really been covered a quite a few times... if you try to search around you can find tons of information on it. With the wiring harness done for you, and since you have a GTS, the swap is honestly not "difficult" at all. It is, however, VERY time-consuming. It's totally doable as long as you're not on a tight schedule and can take your time doing it.

the thing that i am most unsure about myself of is the wiring harness. i would have NO idea how to do it, even if i get the actual harness made to work with my car, i wouldnt know what to do with it. i know there are lots of posts to do with swapping but lots of them are above my ability to understand them fully. i posted my knowledge levels in my first post. they arent the best...:S
for the harness do you just label all the plugs from both motors, unplug them all, and re-plug them in to the corresponding spots on the new motor/chassis? my location isnt the best either, there arent a whole lot of people in the western canada area that i know of, other than walker, kaos, and outsider (with his awesome beams!!!) thanks again 6gc! |

yeah a lot of people "USED" to have trouble with the wiring too, i dont know about Dr.tweak now but i know for sure if you send your wiring harness to DG_performance he can rewire it for you.

The harness really isn't hard to install if you just take your time, most of the plugs only fit into one other spot. If you like, I can label the whole harness for you after rewiring it. -Doc -------------------- -Dr Tweak, 6GC's resident engine swap wiring expert extraordinaire Click here to see my swaps drtweak@phoenixtuning.com |

so would you say with my limited knowledge of cars i should be able to do it myself, as long as i take my time?
would a chiltons or haynes help with the swap at all? i was planning on getting one so i can try and do more maint work, and try and learn a bit more about my car... 1-10 how hard would you say it is, if you knew nothing about cars? This post has been edited by 6gsillyca: Jul 26, 2006 - 1:05 AM |
