So today, I'm driving around, like I usually do, and I hear a familar and unwanted clunking when I brake, as well as some higher pitched irregularly spaced noises.

I think my right rear wheel bearing is shot. Again. I replaced it a little over 1K ago, and the aforementioned noises were present before I did it, and magically disappeared after. My hope is that I'm just retarded, the bearing is fine, nothing's on the actual axle is loose, and I just need to replace my worn struts/sway bar bushing/something else not expensive.

I jacked 'er up after I got home, wiggled the tires, sure enough, the right one's got a little play, and the left one's tight as <insert vulgar term here>.

Any suggestions?? When I replaced it a month ago, I just bought a wheel bearing, and ended up paying almos the price difference of a wheel bearing vs bearing and hub assembly for a shop to press it.

Shiza, I'm going to go punch a wall or something.

Good idea. No need to be spending more money on silly things like fixing walls.

As much as I like being right...I hope I'm wrong frown.gif

lowerball joint or tierod end can cause loosenes. if the shop pressed it wrong it could have damamged the new bearing as well.

I'm going to take the whole tire/caliper/rotor off tomorrow, anything in specific I should check before just consulting a HAYNES book and going to town?

If the bearing is bad again you may have to replace the entire hub. spindle if nec.

I know the struts are more or less shot, but the noise that I'm hearing presently is one that disappeared after I replaced the bearing.

And I've pretty much come to terms with the fact I'll have to shell out another $100 or so for a bearing and hub assembly. the fact my parents decided to be generous and sponsor the anticipated repair softened the blow a bit.

Also, I doubt it'd be the same, but is there any chance that a different model toyota (corolla/camry) would have the same bearing construction? And if that's a yes, if I found said model in a salvage yard would there be anything wrong with using a part from that? I don't really think this is possible, but I figured it'd be worth asking about.

Thats what i did with my old celica...i replaced three bearings before I realized the hub was knicked....

i went to a junkyard...grabbed a spindle and replaced it...

im not too sure but i think the camrys of the same year as your celica may be interchangable......again NOT SURE

Okay, here's what I know:

I called up a half dozen auto parts stores, everyone that was selling a 'bearing and hub assembly" had them around $72. This was a few bucks less than I paid for what I was told was just the right rear wheel bearing. I figured I was finally going to get a break. I asked the guy on the phone too, "I won't need to press the old bearing off to get the hub on?" "Nope, just got to take the 4 bolts off, then bolt this one on."

Turns out on Advance Auto Parts website (the store that's getting it in stock for me tomorrow), the bearing and hub assembly picture, at least, is just the bearing/housing and all that, no HUB.

Now I really am going to punch something, probably that damn salesman who put me on hold for 15 minutes then didn't know what he was selling to me.

And I got sway bar bushings for $4.68 a pop, at least that's cheap.

Now I know that I spose. I'd seen anywhere from 200-320 when I was doing the job a month ago, but I had a lapse of naivety and assumed the prices just miraculously dropped 150 in 3 weeks.
