MY timing belt ripped a couple months back. Midas charged me 700. But the thing was they kept replacing other parts that wasn't neccesary like a new distributor and spark plugs and oil change and etc. They even tried to replace the water pump which I had no problems with the water pump. I stopped them otherwise my bill would have been 1200. But they charged me for everything overall 900. And they also gave me an extra 50 miles? The hell? Did they take my car for a joy ride?!?

My mechanic charged me $300 Cdn labour for the tuneup.
$250 for the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, idle pulley, crank seal, and oil pump seal.
I bought the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, and fuel filter myself and he also installed them (included in the $300 labour).

if you do the timing belt and water pump, parts and labor will be between 300-400, depending on where you have it done.
if your car has more than 75K on it, i'd say do the water pump too.
they tend to start to go bad around 100K or so.

Timing belt, tensioner, etc.. and valve cover gasket.

$196 Parts
$200 Labor

Just got the car back tonight.

Isn't the water pump on the outside of the engine, and easy to change?

i think the water pump is next to the timing belt or they have to pull out the water pump to gain access to it, that's why people suggests to change the water pump at the same time with the timing belt. correct me if i am wrong guys.

you thinking about the old engine where the water pump was put on the outside and driven by an accessory belt.

the modern engines have the water pump driven by the timing belt. So if you want to change the water pump you need to take off the timing belt and reset the cams/timing. Another reason is these two items (timing belt and water pump) tend to wear out about the same time. So its always adviced to change both.

A guy I used to work for, just a local wrenchmonkey.

The water pump on this car from what I remember (and that isn't much) is behind the engine driven by a flat belt.
