QUOTE(ra65_22re @ Nov 1, 2006 - 3:45 PM) i heard that a big brake kit doesnt do much better than just upgrading your stocks. like getten a better compound pads and drilled/slotted rotors. is there that big of a different? i know it would be a lot cheaper than getten willowood. not as sexy but cheaper. True that. If you get upgraded stock pads, rotors, and lines, you'll most likely be happy. The car doesn't wiegh much, so it just doesn't need the bigger brakes. I've got a set of 4 piston calibers I was thinking about test fitting to my Celica to see how much modifications are needed. As of right now, it looks like all I'll have to do is make a different mount. Shouldn't be hard. If I do it over winter break, I'll let you all know. I might sell the plates and calipers if it's not that hard to put together. -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

90% of people who get 'big brakes' do it for aesthetic value. You gotta abuse brakes pretty hard and very frequently to make full use of fixed 4+ piston calipers and 12+ inch rotors. I know I got bigger alltrac front brakes for the looks...

I agree with kwanza. I just put on crossed drilled rotors on my GT and I really don't feel a big difference from stock (non drilled) rotors. The only thing that makes me say "wow" is when I see them on the car.
bigger brakes will make the car stop better but do you really need them to ? the stock brakes work well when they have good pad/rotors. IMO it isn't worth it unless you are going for a "bling" upgrade factor. If you really want an upgrade then switch to SS braided lines, that seems to be the weakest point of our braking system, which is minimal. -------------------- |

I think that the weakest point of most everyone's braking system is their tires. Brake upgrades don't help much if your car won't stick to the road.

idk about the rest of you...jdg should be able to back me up on this, though.
as an auto-x'er, i USE BRAKES. i haven't have good results with drilled/slotted rotors...they seem to warp easier from the heat. maybe i need to buy better ones....but they do eat up an expensive set of pads a little too fast for my liking. i've been known to use up brake pads pretty fast...like a whole set of hawks in one track day at waterford hills. as far as i can tell, the best ways to improve your braking are: -install stainless lines -use motul dot 4 rbf600 fluid (my personal recommendation) -get the best pads you can (green stuff, hawk, etc.) -get good tires. please do not underestimate the importance of good rubber in stopping ability. i'm waiting for spring to do all of this to my new celica, but that was the combination that worked miracles for my old one. -------------------- ![]() do you know who i am, mr. worley? |
