you have to doubble check the pinout for the year and gen that you have. 90-91 and 92-93 normally have had a few changes as well as 3rd gen motors. my motor is a 1990 st185.

if you look at the last pinout posted, youll see that tcp on the 1st plug is correct. problem is, that those pinouts are for the ecu side, and not the plug. whenever you read a wiring diagram, and it calls for a specific pin, you should unplug the plug and look at the female end, head on. then cunt from left to right till you get to the 6th pin. if u do this with the plug connected, and the wires facing you, you would have to count backwards from right to left to get the same pin. if you do that to the pinout posted above, youll see that it is in fact, ecu plug 1, pin 6.

I just installed the red/green leds in my celica for knock monitoring. Thank you for this great idea Lago's! smile.gif I do however have one question. The green led lights up just before I am actually boosting. When its about 4 in mmhg. Is this what you guys are seeing also? Thanks

Yeah, and I know I wired it up right. I checked, double checked, and triple checked. 3rd gen swaps can't use the knock mod.

i have a 3rd gen with the knock mod on it too and it does the same thing. however if the engine does throw a code the light will stay red rather then blinking.

i also noticed that in the upper rpms the light will stop blinking and say solid red. It appears as though the knock system blinks the light faster and fast while in boost as the rpms get higher.... ... someone told me something about the knock being monitered by something called pulse modulation which is why when the mod is done on a 3rd gen it doesnt work like it does on the 1st and 2nd gen.

one useful item is the light will only blink after the engine has reached a good temp other then that it will keep it in safe mode, and it will also tell you if your car is in safe mode or not and when use in conjunction with the CEL light it will determine if you had a knock or if it was just a CEL code 54 type thing.

The third gen ECU has a pulse width modulated TVSV. If the lights flash back and forth it means it's working... If the red light is on steadily then you're in safe mode meaning that the TVSV is held closed limiting boost to waste gate pressure. If you can deal with the flashing lights there's no reason to disconnect it.

EDIT: Urbandork beat me to it... That was me telling you about the pulse width modulation BTW, though it's not in reference to how the knock is monitored, it's how the TVSV is controlled.

I'm still a little unclear. On my buddies 3rd gen 3sgte Runninglow, his red stays solid, but the green will blink while boosting. No matter what the red stays solid. Its the green that turns on into boost and blinks until he is off boost.

So because he has the red light on constantly he is in safe mode? IIRC he is boosting about 10 psi. How is that safe mode?

The light stays red at idle or cruising, and turns green when boosting. If the light wont turn green under boost, then it means its in safe mode.

That's fine. It's working. If you don't get a green light it means you're in safe mode.

It will not work at all on an ems, since and ems is a whole new ecu that has its own way of doing things.
