yea, 0-60 in a gt is pretty quick, cant get the 5s to go over 90mph though, it gets all blah.

My STX was acually very quick with the cold air/full race exaust, and larger injectors...oh yea timing was also advanced all the way(dont flame, car wouldnt run if it wasnt) but that thing flew, hitting the speed limiter was an easy task............hmmm I miss that car:(

80hp at 6000 rpms is as good as 100hp at 5000 rpms... why? Gearing.

I know nothing about speed and timing, but I would like to say you got skills holding that camera that steady while accelerating and shifting hard like that!

Great job!

not really true....

if you're revving up to 6000 rpm you're still in the same gear that you just passed peak power in, unless you have a magic shifter and you jump from 2nd gear at 5000 to 3rd at 6000, you're still in 2nd when you're at 6000 rpm. the ST's (7A-FE's) power band is centered around its torque which begins relatively early around 2500rpm and falls off just before 5500rpm. HP quickly peeks up near redline at around 5600-5700rpm, and everything falls off very steeply after 6000rpm because the engine cannot breath at that speed. the head, valve size, and cams are the reason why.

now all of this powerband talk is assuming you're stock. theres a few things that'll change this, FI, NOS, some bolt ons. ive noticed that the best part of my powerband is now above 3500rpm, really pulls good around 4500, but definately fades right around 5700rpm. the F head and cams are centered around a low-mid rpm powerband for fuel economy and lowered emissions.

ya so i got bored today and thought i'd have alittle fun and make a video, it was pretty hard to hold a camera just right while driving a stick shift car laugh.gif so anyway, this isn't my cars full acceleration, but almost, when it goes all out the tires spin and hop around to much in first and shifting to second so that would have made it to shaky to record it. i'll make another one after the turbo is installed and we'll see the difference biggrin.gif so what do you guys think?

Damn you car is quicker than mine, I have a 97 convertible (automatic)

Think of it in reverse. The car has more torque in the low rpms... but doesn't accelerate as fast because of the engine speed. Now... say you're accelerating till you reach peak power, then you shift and drop off of it, the engine slows down and now has to work its way back to reach peak power... however because it drops below peak power... the engine is now slower and needs speed up again with less momentum. The time you sit below peak power is about the same as the time you sit above peak power.

Point is, the reason the engine is pushed till redline is because even though there is less power there, on the upshift the rpm drop into the powerband so you maintain engine speed and start the next gear with full acceleration force. Much more efficient use of the given power. For example... when you want to pass somebody... and you happen to be cruising at 80mph in 5th gear around 4000 rpms... is it faster to punch it in 5th or downshift to 4th? This is different from engine to engine... but get on a track and test it. I don't like hearing repeats of what others say.

i had to give it a shot myself, crappy vid since i used a camera though

didnt want to push my baby too hard, but think i can cut the time to 60 by maybe 1.5 seconds if i start with higher revs and rev a bit further so i dont have to shift to 3rd, gotta try again tomorrow biggrin.gif

then i'm gonna give her some sweet maintenance for never letting me down smile.gif wink.gif

yay click me!

of course its in km/h and not mph lol

It's the same engine that's in the GT celica, so no it's not exactly a rocket. But makes for a pretty peppy stoplight to stoplight car. They are decent from a stop because of the awesome traction/launching and the low end 5sfe torque.
