Since my swap, I have done all oil changes except one on my car. The one exception was done by a toyota dealer. When I go to the toyota parts dept for oil filter they have always given me the same oil filter as 5sfe. Even when they did the oil change themselve they used the same one for 5sfe. The very first time I made sure they understood the filter is for a 3sgte motor and they told me its the same filter. But for the first time today at a different dealer, the parts dept told me the filter is different. Now I just want to have a confirmation from you guys regarding this. I have just checked online and the part numbers are indeed different but I want to know from you guys. Is the oil filter for the 3sgte different from 5sfe? thanks b -------------------- 3sgteing.

The only difference is the 3sgte filter is a bit longer. Which makes it easier to access. You can use either with no problem. I prefer the longer one.

When I did my first oil change the first time. We had 4 guys that tried to take it off, but nothing. Too short to get a good grip. Ended up putting a screw driver through it and making small turns.

Buy the claw style oil filter removal tool that hooks up to a standard ratchet or air tool. It works perfectly.

Lexus and toyota have a special service tool that fits over the filters perfectly. Its used for the new filter element housings. |

The taller filter has more filtration capacity (surface area)
I've been using oil filter wrench for years. No problem whatsoever. It like $5 at Walmart. -------------------- _Gary

I'm a lubrication engineer so you can believe this if you want [or don't - it matters little to me] - the taller filter just provides a longer lifetime on the filter. When we spec automotive type filters at my job it's because the customer has a specific filter lifetime they are requesting.
Taller filter = more surface area = longer lifetime between filter/oil changes. Smaller micron rating = more filtration = smaller contaminate particles. Plain and simple. Just think about it for a minute. You can find evidence to back this up on many websites and technical design manuals. -------------------- ![]() |

So from now on, its the taller filter for me. Thanks -------------------- 3sgteing.
