So after having my car for just over 2 years...and for the first time...the FIRST TIME...my check engine light went on frown.gif Have no clue of what happened either. I was driving down a side road, takin her easy and it went off. Im gonna hook her up to a scanner tomorrow and see what the code is/how to clear it. Hope its nothing thats gonna cost me $. Ive already spent enough $ on my car in the last month.

I tightened my gas cap no more than 2 min b4 the light went on. I filled up, put the gas cap back on, tightened it down untill it clicked 4 times, then i drove off...2 min later..light goes on.

I also checked to see if it was a dummy code by cycling the key 3 times...still didnt clear. I dunno if that works for OBD1 cars or just OBD2 cars. Oh well..im not driving any where tonight.

Jump these two. Then turn the key to the on position without starting the car. It will flash a number of times, then pause, then flash again. Example: It will flash twice, then a short pause, then flash six times. That means code 26. They'll be a longer pause, and then it will flash the code again. There can be multipul codes.

all you need to check the code is a paper clip. just connect the TE1 and E1 connecters in the diagnostics box (make sure the key is in the ON position) and read the code as above ^

my guess is it's the EGR if it's going on and off repeatedly.

HA!..i finaly got off my fat ass and decided to check the code today and guess what, EGR. It was weird though cuz i went almost a week without it coming on, then just today as i was going to get some food i checked it and it said code 71 EGR malfunction. So now i gotta figure out whats goin on with that.

Any one else have problems with their EGR?/have any idea of how much a new one goes 4?

yeah I had the same exact problem. I replaced it with a different EGR and vaccuum module and it still didn't fix my problem. what DID fix my problem was pulling it off, and cleaning out the hose as well as the two ports. intake and exhaust. get some carb cleaner and Q-tips. it's easiest to get to if you pull the intake and throttle body out. then, after you're done, pull the EFI fuse for 30 seconds to reset your codes.

It's actually perfectly normal to have the light go on and off.
If the ECU doesn't see the problem for 3 consecutive trips, it will turn the light off.
If the problem comes back, it will of course turn the light back on.
The code will still be stored in memory regardless.

Not to be a dick, but just because your car had that problem means nothing.
It could have been any of 20+ codes.....
ALWAYS check the code before doing anything.
Throwing out a fix before you have a code hurts more than it helps. smile.gif

As far as I know, OBDI [up to 95 in the Celicas] don't have EVAP codes. The gas cap is an EVAP code.

ABS problems will turn on the ABS light, not the CEL.

first time I did it took me maybe an hour and a half or so, taking breaks and stuff. but when I went back to take it off a second time, I got the intake, throttle body, EGR, and the hose from the EGR off in under 15 minutes. depends how well you know your car.
